Study: Arizona's E-Verify Law Reduced Illegal Migration, Increased Returns
Study: Arizona's E-Verify Law Reduced Illegal Migration, Increased Returns
Tue, Jun 5th 2018 @ 5:06 pm EDT
A study by researchers at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Colorado-Boulder found that most communities in Mexico send migrants to specific U.S. destinations, and that communities with stronger ties to Arizona saw decreased emigration and increased return migration. Researchers concluded this was the result of the Legal Arizona Workers Act (LAWA), which requires all Arizona employers to use E-Verify.
A press release for the study said, "For the first time, our study shows that state-level immigration restrictions in the United States were effective in deterring the flow of unauthorized migrants into this country. Previous research had shown that state-level employment restrictions reduced the size of a state's population of likely unauthorized individuals, but it wasn't clear whether enforcement diverted migrants to other U.S. destinations or if these policies slowed international migration."
The researchers tracked geographic migration using data from a Mexican program that gives identification cards to Mexican migrants in the U.S. and other data from the U.S. and Mexican census bureaus. This enabled researchers to determine where migrants lived in the United States and where they were born in Mexico.
The data showed the migrants living in different states often came from different parts of Mexico.
Using this information, the researchers then examined the LAWA's effect on migration. They compared Mexican locations where migrants favor Arizona as their destination to locations where migrants go elsewhere in the United States. The communities that favored Arizona experienced increased return migration from the United States and decreased emigration to the United States.
"Our findings show that labor-market interventions such as the E-verify program can affect international migration patterns, leading to a reduction in the total number of unauthorized migrants in the United States."

E-Verify is a common sense program that works. However, for the full effect we must mandate it nationally. A nationally required mandate will prevent us from playing the whack-a-mole game with illegal moving from states with it to states without it.

I don't agree! E-Verify is a tool. Government might make a law that protects employers if they use E-Verify and it approves an illegal alien. But E-Verify does not prevent employers from hiring illegals under the table. We must give employers the right to ask. E-Verify can be one method. But this idea that it is the cure-all is a placebo effect.
Sort of like sex offender laws that prohibit convicted sex offenders from being with 3000 feet of a school or park. So parents feel safe turning their children loose. But that is a placebo, as yet to be caught sex offenders are not limited by such laws, and are very much a threat.
And government having such complete access to virtually every citizen's records, is just like having full gun registration by government.
And employer should be able to contact ICE to verify the legality of a person claiming to be an alien. And there should be a verification source for citizens. That is all. Then it is up to employers to use such tools to make sure they are not hiring illegal workers.

The Arizona SB 1070 law which includes many other state actions against illegal immigration is the reason there has been a decline. You can't just single out one action and give it all the credit for the outcome.

Nobody, including me, has ever said E-Verify is a cure-all. No single tool is going to end our illegal immigration problem. I think everyone pretty much understand that. However, I strongly believe a nationally mandated E-Verify program needs to be one of the tools in our toolbox."The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing" ** Edmund Burke**

Our schools can't refuse illegal alien students. Police can't arrest illegal aliens except if they commit a crime. Our governments issue driver's licenses to illegal aliens. Our governments offer many freebees to illegal aliens. Congress refuses to allow the building of a wall. Congress doesn't want our military to secure our border.
With all of this, is it our patriotic duty to surrender more of our rights to combat a problem created by our government? Let them take away the freebies. Let them take away driver's licenses. Let them arrest illegal parents of illegal children in school. Let them take into custody any illegal alien they happen to find. When all of those things fail to discourage illegal aliens coming here, then maybe I will believe that we need to give government more control of our lives!

The same right I would be surrendering if the government were able to make us register every weapon we own. If they let you have the weapon, no lose, right! So you should be for 100% gun registration. With E-Verify, the government has a record of every job a person has had for at least three years. No harm unless there is a mistake much as people being wrongly listed on the No Fly List.
"It's not the people who vote that count. It's the people who count the votes." (Joseph Stalin)
The more power we give the government, the more power they will have over us. If you trust Trump, what about the next President?
