Is There Anything Can Be Done About Legal Immigrants Who....

are American in name only? I'm talking about those who refuse to refrain from speaking a foreign language in front of those who don't know it, demand public services in another language (and usually feel it is the job of all Americans to speak their language), talk about remaking this nation into their own image to where their culture and language dominates and eventually is the sole one in the country, only fly the flag of the nation where they emmigrated from, are anti-U.S. Constitution and refuse to call themselves Americans first. To me, only Native Americans/Native Hawaaiians/Native Alaskans who are indigenous of the 50 states have earned the right to be significantly different from the rest of us.

My question is, is is there any way to cause these people (at least most) to act like the immigrants of yesteryear-to speak only English in public, call themselves an American of whatever descent instead of defining themselves only as where they came from, adopt our most basic cultural norms that every generation of Americans has always had in common, and see themselves with Americans of every skin color as "we're all in this thing together" instead of outsiders wanting to be separate though they want the financial benefits of living here regardless. Is there any way to bring back the days when public multilingualism was used only for true international business and one does not see foreign language or bilingual signage every time one turns around even in areas where these types of immigrants are still very low? Can we reverse the damage that's already been done to our culture? Legally and without a war, I mean....

One way is to dismiss the NAFTA TRADE AGREEMENT. That is what caused many of the things you see today. With Spanish on signs and on merchandise packaging and went on to other things and items. Next SECURE OUR BORDERS to stop the illegal entry into this country along with the smuggling of humans and drugs.

And KEEP PESTERING YOUR CONGRESS PEOPLE!

The CHANGE I BELIEVE IN is when I no longer see signs in Spanish and no longer hear messages in Spanish on the phones and no longer see Spanish on my merchandise packaging and no longer see illegals driving in their SUV's and free lunches in public schools for illegals. That is CHANGE I BELIEVE IN!

I may sound angry. That is because I am and I have had my fill of this BS

    thedramaofmy life,

Wow-not even here in South FL (Broward County) have I yet to see Wal-Mart have their isle signs (except for a few around the pharmacy) be bilingual-but that doesn't mean it couldn't happen at any time.

    uniteasone,

Yeah, I agree with you 100%. I am wondering if boycotting any company using bilingual advertising that has nothing to do with international business would work at all these days? I have gone to the extreme of no longer drinking Coke or Pepsi, eating at Burger King or McDonald's, which have all been "a part of me"since early childhood...it's more important to me that my nation survive than these brands (which can be replaced)-but it seems for every company I boycott, more join the agenda of bilingualism-what else can we do, since our law is currently defining the right not to speak English as part of free speech-it simply wasn't thought of before because "back then" most immigrants wanted to be true Americans-you could always move away from those who didn't- and it wasn't as big an issue as it is now.

Stop letting them in. We take more time picking out a pair of shoes than we do in determining who can enter our borders. It would seem that all one needs to do is breathe on his own to gain legal entry along with permission to work, or go to school, or to simply loaf around. We need to get seriously tough on who comes and for what reason.

When bills come up, contact your representatives and let them know how you feel. Heck, why waste time, contact them now.

I am in Rhode Island and nowhere near a border State and yet there are jobs that now require us to be bilingual and speak spanish, our stores and other places have spanish signs everywhere. These people have already changed our nation and are forcing us to conform. We need to fight for our language just as hard as we have been fighting against amnesty. This has got to stop!!!!

YOU BEING ANGRY IS UNDERSTANDABLE BECAUSE, I FEEL THE SAME WAY WITH ALL OF THIS GOING ON IN A COUNTRY THAT I NO LONGER RECONIZE AS THE U.S.A. THAT I ONCE KNEW. OUR GOVERNMENT HAD FAILED US IN FAVOR OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE NO RIGHT TO BE HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE. AND AT THE SAME TIME, THEY ARE MAKING IT RERAL EASY FOR SOME LEGAL IMMIGRANTS TO KEEP THEIR OWN CULTURE, AND THAT SHOULDN'T BE TOLERATED. I MEAN ITS OK TO HOLD ON TO SOME OF YOUR NATIVE CULTURE BUT NOT ALL OF IT. AND THAT IS WHAT TODAY'S LEGAL IMMIGRANTS ARE DOING. AS AFRICAN-AMERICANS, WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT LANGUAGE WAS SPOKEN BY OUR FOREPARENTS BUT WE DON'T. NOT TO SAY THAT WE WOULD USE IT OVER ENGLISH, WE WOULD JUST LIKE TO KNOW. I AM AN AMERICAN FIRST AND FOREMOST, AND I DON'T WANT TO CHANGE WHO I AM.

WHY ONLY SPANISH I'M SURE THERE ARE ILLEGALS HERE FROM A LOT OF OTHER COUNTRIES BUT, FOR SOME REASON ITS THE HISPANICS THAT ARE BEING CATERED TO BY OUR GOVERNMENT.

I want to add that African Americans's ancestors were brought here by force to be slaves to another ethnic group, denied the American dream and not allowed to be a part of mainstream society for a long, long time-I can understand why they developed a culture of their own-it is still part of the American culture regardless-and at least they speak English, if not in the same way most Americans do! And we eat the same foods, fly the same flag, and stand for the same basic principles of freedom and independence. I will stand up to speak for African Americans' rights as well as the mainstream culture because we are all Americans and we are all under attack.

    Yeah, Kiara,

If you cater to one group, I say you must cater to them all. But in all honesty, I don't REALLY want to hear: press one for English, press two for Spanish, press three for Mandarin Chinese, press four for German, press five for Swedish, press six for.....

I didn't vote to live in an "international airport", with people rushing to and fro waiting for their "flight" and having little in common with one another other than being human beings....there was a REASON the people spread all over the earth after the Tower of Babel happened...because it was UNCOMFORTABLE to be around people you couldn't understand.
