School prohibited from accepting foreign studentsBy Jackie Bensen |
Dozens of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents raided offices at the University of Northern Virginia's Annandale campus Thursday.

Agents have removed boxes of documents from a building on Little River Turnpike where the university leases two suites.

The university temporarily can't accept any foreign students, reads a notice posted on the door of the offices. UNVA students must leave the country immediately if they are unable “to continue to attend classes and maintain their active status in a manner required by federal government regulations,â€

India urges US not to victimize UNVA students
    TNN | Jul 30, 2011, 01.10AM IST

NEW DELHI: India on Friday asked the US not to victimize the students of University of Northern Virginia, which is in danger of losing its recognition after investigations by US immigration officials. Of the 2,400 students on the varsity's rolls, a large number of them are said to be Indians.

"The US authorities are taking steps to provide necessary information to help the students transfer to other educational institutions in the US or go back to their home countries," said the foreign ministry in a statement.

"We have impressed upon the US authorities the need to ensure that the students are not victimized in any manner, since they all have valid documents. We have been told that the focus of investigations is not on the students but on the university itself," it added.

It said that US Immigration authorities served a notice of intent to the University of Northern Virginia (UNVA) to withdraw its recognition. However, the university is not likely to be shut down immediately, and would be given a one-month notice for explanation.

The Annandale campus of UNV was raided on Wednesday by officials from various federal agencies, including Immigration and FBI on the charges of fraud. US authorities have kept the Indian Embassy informed as a very large percentage of the university students are Indian nationals, said the foreign ministry.

This is the second such incident in last seven months. In January, US authorities raided and shut down Tri-Valley University in California on charges of immigration fraud, jeopardizing the future of over a 1,000 Indian students.
