A mixed ruling by a federal judge on Alabama’s immigration law only adds to the confusion over America’s immigration policy created by a jumble of state laws.

Judge Sharon Lovelace Blackburn blocked several sections of the law that had been challenged by the Justice Department, religious groups and civil rights organizations, the same combination of opposition to other state-enacted immigration laws.

Judge Blackburn agreed with the government that Alabama intruded on a federal right under the Constitution’s supremacy clause, which makes federal law the “supreme law of the land.â€
