VALLETTA, Malta (di-ve news) -- April 12, 2007 -- 1820CEST -- Illegal immigration topped the agenda of the meetings held during the day between UK Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott and various Maltese authorities including Deputy Prime Minister Tonio Borg, Foreign Minister Michael Frendo and Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi.

During a press conference, Minister Tonio Borg said that during his meeting with Prescott, various ways of co-operation between Malta and the Uk were explored, particularly in the field of justice and home affairs, with a special focus on illegal immigration.

The UK Deputy PM said that illegal immigration is also regarded as a big problem for his country, saying that despite the fact that we are marking the 200th anniversary sine the abolishment of slavery, we are now witnessing a new form of slavery -- the illegal trafficking of persons.

Meanwhile, Prescott also met a delegation from the Labour opposition led by deputy leader Charles Mangion. The MLP delegation exchanged views with the British Deputy PM over its intended policies, the work of the socialist MEPs, the development of the EU, the Labour Party's published foreign policy document and on strengthening ties between the MLP and the UK Labour Party.
