As I understand it, a flat tax can be imposed in different ways. The one I was thinking of would be to include all taxes in the sales price of an item, then the corporation pays the taxes in one lump payment. The "cost of doing business" would be shared by all, without all the current exemptions for capital gains, etc. It's a complicated issue, but it might help solve losing money "under the table." I also think it's way past time to tax remittances sent to other countries, at least for those using Western Union because they can't send a check because they are here illegally and are therefore definitely not paying their share here.

"30% of our "profits" go to city, county, state and federal coffers to run this country."

Which gets the most? Federal or City/county/state?

sofedup I am in favor of a flat sales tax also.

It should be implemented with as little monkeying around as possible.
That means none of the 'deduction' for low income, or any of the other silliness that has been suggested.

Simply have a few things that are tax exempt - food, medicene, etc., and that's all.

Someone's opposition to that was, 'that would make merchants tax collectors'. Do these people not know that they already are tax collectors? The only difference would be the amount of taxes remitting each period.

Isnt a consumption tax different from a flat tax?? I thought a flat tax
was just a set rate on income.

Neil Boortz talks about "imbedded taxes" that will not exist with the fair tax.

How could we trust that they would disappear?

Hmmm.....Maybe we SHOULD have the FAIR TAX! If the illegals had to pay 23% to 30% sales tax, they might all go home!

Everyone has to pay tax now, how is this a cure?

Where there is a will there is a way, good and bad.

Enforcement must happen if we are ever to see the light of day.
