What is wrong with the U.S?

What are we doing? Has anyone noticed that no one can really agree on anything in this country? The vision of this country seems lost. We are teetering out of control, and soon to be insignificant in the world. Our goverment is doing a lousy job all around. Both Dems, and Pubs suck. They no longer care about what happens to this country.

I know what the problem is. CAREER POLITICIANS. They no longer give a shit about anything else except retaining power and getting rich. I want to start something where we get some laws on the books against career politicians. THEY ARE THE PROBLEM. I am sick and tired of this BS!

I have been staying away lately, one because my puter crashed at home and two, I get so angry reading this stuff sometimes, I just want to throttle some of these politicians.

At what point do Americans stand up and say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH?

I've always been a strong supporter of term limits. Unfortunately the individuals we want to impose term limits on are the very same people that make the decision on whether they should have term limits. Convincing them to agree to term limits would be more difficult than convincing a wolf to give up meat as a diet staple. When someone figures out a way to get the U.S. Congress to accept term limits - they'll have 100% of my support!

How did they get rid of corrupt, crooked politicans in the past? How did we get rid of the English Tyrant in the 1700's?

I agree with you Ronster, but only to a point. There's a more serious problem than career politicians ,Walt Kelly's Pogo predicted correctly: "We have met the enemy and he is us."

Politicians show no enthusiasm to fix anything unless there is a huge outcry from their constituents. You and I and the prescient folks on this site do not yet constitute a "huge" outcry. Much of the nation is comfortably apathetic and truly ignorant of the danger the illegal invasion poses.

Sure they hear things now and again, but hey, the current reality show on t.v. is much more interesting. And if they do hear about the problems caused by illegal immigration they hear the sanitized, pro-illegal drivel as media spins the issue to please the big boys in the government or the folks with the most cash.

The main problem, in my opinion, is that the American public is APATHETIC. Unless we somehow wake them up, unless something happens to jar them out of their comatose comfort zone we will make only slow gains, of the one step forward and two steps back kind.

Plato warned: “The price of apathy towards public affairs is to be ruled by evil men”

Other thinkers said it this way:

“Apathy is the glove into which evil slips its hand”

“So much attention is paid to the aggressive sins, such as violence and cruelty and greed with all their tragic effects, that too little attention is paid to the passive sins, such as apathy and laziness, which in the long run can have a more devastating effect.”

“By far the most dangerous foe we have to fight is apathy - indifference from whatever cause, not from a lack of knowledge, but from carelessness, from absorption in other pursuits, from a contempt bred of self satisfaction”

“Science may have found a cure for most evils, but it has found no remedy for the worst of them all--the apathy of human beings.”

“The tyranny of a prince in an oligarchy is not so dangerous to the public welfare as the apathy of a citizen in a democracy”

“The death of democracy is not likely to be an assassination from ambush. It will be a slow extinction from apathy, indifference, and undernourishment.”

Any ideas how to fight against apathy other than grabbing a neighbor or co-worker by the shirt collar and yelling "Turn off the sit-com and pay attention! Illegal immigration will destroy America !" ?

Ron, I think one of the biggest problems that we face is that our citizens are losing loyalty to their own country. Hollywood is pushing the anti-American sentiment down our throats and are making great efforts to "save the world" by providing assistance and blindly giving money to corrupt governments who are not accountable with their donations. I have a hunch that we have donated quite a bit of money to people who will turn around and use that money against us. In an effort to help the rest of the world, we have turned our backs on our own citizens. We allow other countries to bulldoze over our laws and demand rights that are not theirs to take. On the other hand, without the US, many countries will fall into the hands of terrorists and make everyone's life even worse. If people think that radical Islam is bad now, give it some time. This war in Iraq will look mild by comparison. Politicians cater to the vote and citizens are forced to make poor choices to feed their families. We need to stop selling our real estate, ports, bridges, highways and our media before the US is no longer the US. We outsource our jobs and we make ourselves vulnerable by giving other countries access to our citizens' private information. We are so hungry for a dollar here, that nothing else matters. I am convinced that it is not how much money that you have/keep/or spend, it is how you use it that counts. We have to ask ourselves, if the rest of the world turned their backs on us tomorrow, can we sustain our nation? We need to stay self reliant to survive, and that is not happening right now. Our politicians spend more time playing the media, and one upping the other guy, that nothing is getting done. We should teach them a lesson, and not give them a single dime. It is time to even out the playing field and see what they can really do.

Yes, I agree with all of this. We will have only ourselves to blame once we lose our beautiful country. I would love to still get my hands on a few of our politicians though. Shake them up a little. They are so cavalier about what is happening to our country it makes me sick. The same for all these ignorant Americans that are allowing this to happen.

I think it is true that we are to blame for this. We were naive enough to believe that anyone who had lived in, benefitted from, and enjoyed the freedoms of this country - when elected to high office - would think first of this country. It has taken a while for us to admit the horrible truth to ourselves. Some of us realized it earlier than others - some still don't want to believe it.

We do need to start at the local level and begin a change from the ground up - we must or we are lost.

Money is the driving force behind all of this - at least for those making our laws. We still have a little power over how we spend our money and we need to think long and hard about where that money is going.

We need to try to get ourselves out of debt as much as possible.

We need to find ways to limit our tax liability - starve the beast and keep more for ourselves at the same time.

We need to punish the corporations who work against us.

We still have a little time to do those things - but this is moving at a very fast pace. It is unbelievable how it has advanced in just the last 5 or so years.

There are a lot more people upset about illegal immigration than those of us who post on this board. It has been a very important issue to the American people for quite some time. The politicians pay no attention. They know they can count on Democrats voting Democrat and Republicans voting Republicans and those of us who really want a choice pretty much stay home.

I agree that we each need to take responsibilty and promote positive change ourselves. I was someone who was under the misguided belief that the government and elected officials would take care of this sticky business of illegal immigation .After I came to the conclusion that the goverment was extremely apathetic on this issue , I felt betrayed. I knew it was up to me to stand up and do all I could to promote change. I believe that there are many people who just don't want to believe that the government has turned a blind eye to many critical issues.Unfortunately, hiding fom the truth does not make it go away.
