Which Key Group is Considering Endorsing Trump?

Which Key Group is Considering Endorsing Trump?

Oct 7, 2015 Source: AAN by: AAN Staff

Billionaire developer Donald Trump has thrown yet another monkey wrench into the political status quo: Some major labor unions are now mulling endorsing the front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination.

It's a move that would have been unthinkable in previous election cycles, but Trump has fans among the union rank and file and deviates enough from the GOP platform that labor leaders are giving him a serious look.

On Tuesday, the 1.4 million-member International Brotherhood of Teamsters announced its executive council would put off a decision on a presidential endorsement due a lack of consensus. Fox News reported that the delay was caused partly by members' support for Trump and that the union was seeking a meeting with the candidate.

The following day, Chris Shelton, president of the 600,000-member Communication Workers of America, told Politico that his union was putting off a presidential endorsement for the same reason. "If our members come out with Donald Trump, then we're going to endorse Donald Trump," he said.

Trump has resonated with conservatives, but it's clear that his tough talk on trade and his promise to "Make America Great Again!" has a broader appeal to those in sectors of the economy that have been hard hit by free trade agreements and outsourcing.

Obviously, losing out on the endorsement of multiple unions would be a disaster for Hillary Clinton, who can't seem to figure out how she feels about American workers. In typical Clintonion fashion, she's still trying to figure out her position on the controversial Trans Pacific Trade Partnership.

In previous elections, this is the sort of thing that interest groups have learned to grin and bear before holding their nose and endorsing candidates; but this isn't a typical election. By speaking vaguely and plainly about how establishment candidates like Clinton and Bush have sold out Middle America, Trump has allowed underserved constituencies to imagine the possibility that a candidate, for once, represents their interests.

I hope more trade, skilled and manufacturing workers unions consider Trump. I truly believe these Americans bring the solid thinking and practical platforms to our Republican Party. Things haven't been right since so many of them went to the Democratic Party, which sadly hasn't done anything for them except hand off their jobs, wages and benefits to illegal aliens and excess immigrants and ship their jobs overseas through Free Trade Treason agreements. I hope Trump helps bring them back to our party, because unlike his predecessors, he will end illegal immigration, excess immigration and bury this disaster we know as Free Trade Treason, but to do this we need the support of our union workers.
