LA mayor: 'Donald Trump will not win California'
By Rafael Bernal - 05/24/16 06:05 PM EDT
The mayor of Los Angeles said presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump will not win in California in the fall, calling him an extreme candidate who should not be “normalized.”
Mayor Eric Garcetti said Trump doesn't represent Californian values and predicted that he will have limited electoral success in the state.
"Donald Trump will not win California," Garcetti said in a press call with reporters Tuesday when asked about some Republicans' hopes to turn California red.
Trump began his campaign in June by declaring that Mexican immigrants "bring crime" and are "rapists."
"He's a racist, he's a bigot, he's sexist," Garcetti said.
Garcetti said Trump's positions on immigration and the economy mean "it's going to be a very clear election, no matter who our nominee is," referring to the ongoing Democratic presidential primary battle between Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton.
Some Democrats worry – and Trump seems confident – that his overlap with Sanders on issues like free trade and a similarly anti-establishment campaign will draw some of the Vermont senator’s supporters to vote for him over Clinton. And the acrimony between Democratic candidates has further fueled that perception.
But Garcetti said social issues and immigration policy will help Democrats retain young voters, adding that "millennials are smart about their finances," and perceive "a kind of recklessness" in Trump.
Trump will visit California Wednesday, ahead of the state's June 7 primaries. A previous visit to California in April detonated violent protests against Trump's anti-immigration rhetoric.
Henry Vandermeir, chair of the Democratic Party of Orange County, said he hopes things will be cooler this time around.
"This time hopefully if there are going to be people down there they're going to be a little bit more laid back about things and not be so tense,” he said.
California overwhelmingly voted for Barack Obama in 2012, and a recent poll puts Clinton up by 14 points over Trump in the state.

LA mayor calls Trump ‘bigot’ and ‘racist’ ahead of Southland visit

Speaking to reporters in advance of Donald Trump’s visit to Southern California, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti Tuesday denounced the presumptive Republican presidential candidate as a “bigot” and a “racist” whose values run counter to those of Southland and state residents.
“I think that all of us that have spoken out against the things he has said and what he represents,” Garcetti said in a media conference call on behalf of the Democratic National Committee. “We simply can’t afford to give him a free pass. Donald Trump does not represent the values of Los Angeles, of Southern California and of this state of opportunity, of inclusivity and making sure that we build a strong America that leaves nobody behind.”
There was no immediate response from the Trump campaign.
Garcetti blasted Trump’s comments about Muslims and Mexican immigrants, saying, “Instead of focusing on fixing our broken immigration system, Donald Trump has been doing the exact opposite, trying to exploit unfounded fears for political gain — calling Mexicans rapists and drug dealers, saying that he could somehow deport 11 million undocumented immigrants and build a wall that would be easy to build, and he cited, I think, the Great Wall of China as evidence that it wouldn’t be so tough … something built over centuries and with a loss of many lives.”
The mayor said the nation needs bridges, not walls, stressing that Los Angeles embraces diversity.
“We make sure that everyone is treated with the respect and dignity that they deserve,” he said. “We don’t take LGBT or Muslim or Mexican Americans and try to scare people about them. We actually invite them to be part of the core prosperity of this city. And I think we have to keep speaking up, but what we cannot do with Donald Trump is normalize him as a candidate. This is something that Hillary Clinton talked about last night — that Bernie Sanders has mentioned as well. He’s a racist, he’s a bigot, he’s sexist, and he’s the walking embodiment of the worst of our values.”
Trump is expected to be in the Los Angeles area on Wednesday, attending a rally at the Anaheim Convention Center, then taking part in a fundraiser at the Los Angeles-area home of investor Thomas Barrack Jr., a longtime Trump business associate and supporter.

I would be shocked if he did win California, pleasantly shocked, but shocked none the less.

I don't think Mayors of major cities should call Trump a "racist" because he wants to stop illegal immigration or a "bigot" because he wants a ban on Muslim immigration, which we don't need to begin with because we don't need any additional immigration at this time, until our government figures out what is going on with radical Islamic terrorism.
Shame on the LA Mayor! Shame, shame, shame on him.

This is a state that needs more relief than any other state from the onslaught of illegal immigration. Every person should realize that this is not about Latino's, it is about the ending of illegal immigration which happens to be dominated by Latino's. Be an American first and reject illegal immigration, it is not good for your country. Most legal immigrants are much harsher regardless of their country of origin towards illegal immigration.

I really think that Trump has a chance of winning California. He has all the right chemistry. This state elected two Republican governors, Ronald Reagan and Arnold Schwartzenegger. (Didn't Reagan win California both times for both the primaries and actual presidential election?) Both of them were actors. Trump is the next best thing, a former Reality Television performer. Reagan and Arnold were really the first Reality Television political personalities. Trump is really more likely to attract the Latino vote, especially Latino men who would rather see a male Republican anti-illegal president than a woman president. Latino men are more likely to vote than Latino women.

HILLARY CLINTON POISED TO DEFEAT BERNIE SANDERS IN CALIFORNIA'S PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY, SURVEYUSA POLL SHOWS
By ABC7.com staff
Monday, May 23, 2016 05:20PM
LOS ANGELES (KABC) --
Hillary Clinton is well positioned to defeat Bernie Sanders in California's presidential primary, according to an exclusive Eyewitness News poll conducted by SurveyUSA.
The poll results, released on Monday, showed that Clinton would defeat Sanders 57 percent to 39 percent. The results of the poll showed that Sanders continues to lead among the youngest voters, while Clinton leads by 12 points among voters age 35 to 49.
The poll showed that Clinton also leads by 34 points among voters age 50 to 64, and she leads by 45 points among voters age 65 and above.
Also, Clinton has majority support among every income group, while Sanders leads by 2:1 among first-time primary voters.
Results from a SurveyUSA poll released earlier this month showed that 54 percent of registered Republican voters are resigned to vote for Donald Trump and 57 percent of registered Democratic voters are resigned to vote for Clinton.
The latest poll results indicate that Clinton carries California 52 percent to Trump's 38 percent.
To date, Clinton leads Trump by 14 points.
In comparison, Barack Obama carried California by 24 points in 2008 and by 23 points in 2012. For Trump, the survey shows a gender gap. The business mogul is losing California by 3 points among men and 25 points among women.
Another notable figure in the survey results involves Clinton's negatives. Among Democrats who told SurveyUSA they are paying "a lot" of attention to the 2016 election, Clinton defeats Trump in California by 9 points, 50 percent to 41 percent. Trump's negatives have remained constant over the past three polls conducted in California by SurveyUSA, whereas Clinton's negatives have increased over the same period.
In the race for Barbara Boxer's U.S. Senate seat, Attorney General Kamala Harris and Rep. Loretta Sanchez of Orange County are likely to advance to a runoff in the November general election. The poll showed Harris leading Sanchez 31 percent to 22 percent, respectively.
Both candidates are Democrats, which gives Republicans little chance to snag Boxer's seat. The three Republican candidates in the primary combine to receive 25 percent of the primary vote.
Below are the findings from the latest SurveyUSA poll:
1. Primary voters will be asked to vote for a candidate for United States Senator. If you were filling out your ballot in the United States Senate primary now, who would you vote for? For this poll, SurveyUSA interviewed 1,800 state of California adults from May 19 through May 22. Of the adults, 1,598 were registered to vote in the state of California.
Of the California registered voters, 803 were determined by SurveyUSA to be likely to vote in the June 7 Democratic Presidential primary, 1,416 were determined to be likely to vote in the June 7 open, non-partisan U.S. Senate primary, and 1,383 were determined to be likely to vote in the Nov. 8 general election for president.
Monday is the last day to register to vote in California. For more information, visit registertovote.ca.gov.

Really now!
Mike McGetrick, one of two people carrying "Latinos for Trump" signs at the Anaheim rally, said he is part of a group called America First Latinos. He said his neighborhood in nearby Orange is "being overrun" by undocumented immigrants."There are so many of them, and they're everywhere," said McGetrick, 62, a retired city worker. "I can tell an illegal from a regular person just like that."
