Thread: LAPD Open Band Police Communications during May 1 incident

just spent an hour listing to audio recording #1. Sounds like ground commander is Delta 10 George Rodriquez and there are two air units flying I40 and I70. All the officers are calm during audio #1 considering the number of different divisions and departments on the same channel. Man points of interest in Audio #1:

U=requesting unit

T 1.41, U 170 reports JV gang and over head projectiles at Wilshire & Lafayette.
T 2.36, U B10, reports 150-200 crowed, responding to request for additional units.
T 3.11,U 342 female down uk injuires request resuce unit, not seen by officer was reported by citizen.
T 4.35, U IP110, advises Delta 10 500 or so people on 3 of 4 corners.
T 8.47, air unit reports re: woman down, seeing rescue unit that location with women standing.
T 9.26, U comm center, gives out call of assault suspects B/M & H/M at Wilshire and Wilson.
T 11.36, U ?30, couple more bottles thrown NE corner Apt at 6th & Alvarado, nothing on the roof.
T 12.20, U ?, can of coke thrown into middle of st. no one around where it landed no officers hurt. 2 suspects seen.
T 14.45, U I70(air unit), reports Wilshire & Lafayette Park pile of Palm Tree limbs on fire request FD, large fire.
T 17.14, U M50, reports 6th & Alvarado large group gathering.
T 17.30, U 1SL, request transport unit in park at 7th & Alvarado for 1 prisoner.
T 19.40, U ?, slight crowd not 415's (JV's)
T 19.58, U ?, have had some bottles thrown no officers hurt.
T 20.55, U ? Air Unit, McArthur Park clear
T 21.10, U 2Q52, small brush fire Hover south of Wilshire.
T 22.30, U ?, request transport unit at 7th and Alavardo have been waiting about an hour.

the rest of audio #1 is tipical bs calls. noted nothing on this audio that would indicate large problem all units were calm on the radio considering the amount of radio traffic.
Going for another cup of coffee and Audio #2.

Audio #2 starts out calm enough and really indicated no real problems through out the tapping. In one part there are three different things going on 2L10 trying to deal with foot and vehicle traffic, some jerk wanting the air unit to turn off the spot lights so they can do a tv interview and other units that are concerned with the JV group that might be a problem.

T 5.38, U ?,6th & Alvarado this crowd is starting to get kind of rowdy, send metro over to clear them out.
T 5.52, U ?, coming out in the st. scream & hollering we should do something.
T 6.08, U ?, coming out into the st we got to do something.
T 6.27, U 2L10, no cheering and chanting....(garble) not much... crowd 50-75... looking at them looking at us.....doing nothing.
2L10 was asked if he needed any more units
T 7.07, U 2L10, negative I do not need any assets to 6th and Alvarado, looking to deescalate.
T 11.02, U ?, Children, children another Unit ..is that you John Wayne
T 14.03 U G10, to air unit can you turn the light off (they are setting up to do TV interview)
T 14.10 Air Unit, response people throwing articles with out the light.
T 14.40, U NY241, several suspects Alvarado & 6th armed them selfs with bottles...throw at the cars... black & whites.
T 15.05, U ?, suspect male hispanic 6'2" wearing black... .
T 15.40, U?, ...garble.. multiple bottles.
T 15.44, U ?, red back pack, red back pack, west bond.... gray sweat shirt...garble..
T 16.21, U NY240, ..at corner have him in custody.
looking for 2nd suspect...garble...
T 17.43, U ?, red white shirt, ball cap.
Normal radio traffic while searching for 2nd suspect
T 21.30, U ?, 415 (JV) group 6th & Alvarado running into st.
T 22 .18 ?, U ?, ..garble.. about a crowd do any units want to put in over time.
T 22.23, U 2L10, Air ship do we have any units available that can start policing can start issuing tickets (etc). All these guys are doing is to draw us in looking for attention.... we are going to be here all night.
.....(garble) 2L10 replies, if they start jumping jamming in middle of st. lets get some motor enforcement over if we get anything else we'll deal with it if not, if we just stand there in front of them doing nothing they are going to keep...(garble).. 2L10 do we have any units there now.. Yes there are 12 units here now., yea, we are taking care of the problem at 6th & Alvarado now. do have under control, pushing them out now, can we get that bike squad over here to watch our back.
above traffic ran to T 23.38
about 23.39, U 2L10 to air ship how is... Alvarado looking. Airship response....all units are looking good.

the rest of audio #2 was normal bs traffic.

Did not note any abnormal voice changes in the officers to indicate excitment except at T 5>38 by unknown unit and crowd getting rowdy etc.

There were probable as normal other channels being used so we do not hear all the radio traffic.

After having watched the news this AM and listening to this lastnight, I gathered two points from the whole thing.

First is that police were simply there, making sure things were calm and stayed orderly. They began having trouble with a few within the crowd, but were having a hard time mainting an eye on those in the crowd who were there to incite trouble.

Second, as they began to have trouble, they had to bring in this team in order to try to break it up, as there is NO way for them to pick and choose who they told to leave the park, aside from those there to incite trouble, so when they did give the order for this group to disband and leave the park, the non-inciters refused and resisted, which made them part of the problem and this could have given those trouble makers the go-ahead to wage an all out assault on police.

I personally think, with common sense in mind, that the police were acting in a way which was prudent and realistic given the groups over all resistane to break up and leave, and considering they could not root out the trouble makes from within the group, they had to ask them ALL to go, which they would not.

Sounds like the making of a riot to me, worthy of police force.

Hi HankH, welcome to ALIPAC. Don't you guys have recordings of your own communications on hand for times like this? I would think that the dispatcher, just like 911 has it all recorded for the record.
