Paying a high price for security

"Anyone hoping for some clarity or balance in our nation’s vision of homeland security had to be dismayed by several recent news stories that demonstrated a large disconnect between policy makers in Washington, D.C., and the realities of life along the Texas-Mexico border.

There was the visit two weeks ago of Texas Homeland Security Director Steve McCraw to Port Mansfield, where he lent an ear to requests for about $1 million in federal tax money from Willacy County officials for the purpose of securing that fishing village, population 415.

He listened to pleas from the sheriff, the navigation district and the constable’s office, which included money for two boats, a four-wheel drive vehicle, an all-terrain vehicle and surveillance cameras for the harbor and jetties.

McCraw remarked, “You’re in a unique area. You have the convergence of crime and the potential of terrorist countries smuggling people.â€
