Letter: Immigration plan would hurt U.S. workers

Complex immigration reform is a fraud having little to do with immigration. A more genuine title could be "all-inclusive labor subsidy act of 2007," its cost so high as to be hidden in a haze of silence. If enacted, taxpayers will fund untold billions that will suppress their own future earnings. A very liberal "guest worker" program will ensure the status quo, wages bleed up and profits trickle down. Despite some flowery and compassionate rhetoric, it is what it is - a colossal subsidy.

The '80's amnesty cure-all might have been good if enforced. Unfortunately, priorities for American workers were nil, and the welcome mat for illegals went out. The results (still in progress) have been widespread hardships for so many they could fill volumes of categories. Our "protectors" are still sitting on their hands but formulating a massive redo.

What if American profits were taking a beating? Answer: swift action on a fence the length of the entire southern border for, say, "national security." Of course, at taxpayers' expense.

Even those with restricted vision should see the danger signs that this democratic republic is sliding into an elite banana republic.
