Top CNN employees are frustrated. They breathlessly went live to Donald Trump’s news conference at his new hotel in Washington D.C., only to wait helplessly as veterans stood up to explain why they support Trump as commander-in-chief.

“It’s hard to imagine this as anything other than a political rick-roll,” anchor Jake Tapper said wryly as CNN cut away from the broadcast of the Trump event and asked him to comment.

The Trump campaign signaled that the Republican presidential nominee would address the birther controversy, but the first 20 minutes of the event featured veterans telling the media why they supported Trump.

CNN eventually cut away from the event – even as veterans continued to speak, as anchors griped that the event was not what they thought it was. But they were forced to return to Trump just minutes later as he made a short definitive statement that he believed that Obama was born in the United States.

“I really don’t quite know what to make of that except for that we got played again by the Trump campaign which is what they do,” said John King afterward, pointing out that Trump tricked them into covering a live event.

Marc Lamont Hill a host of BET News, called Trump’s stunt “repugnant.”

“Donald Trump has never give a speech this short before on any issue!” he said. “He talks for hours sometimes when it’s supposed to be five minutes.”

CNN’s Dana Bash admitted that CNN would have never aired Trump’s event if it knew about the structure of the event.

“What they did, was tease us that he was going to say something, then as John said, played us by making sure that everybody who has an ability to show Donald Trump actually took 20 minutes or got 20 minutes of very important decorated veterans praising somebody who they think should be the next commander-in-chief, which would not have been live on cable news otherwise,” she said.

Trump is one smart cookie!!

He maneuvered the press into showing more concern for where Trump thinks Obama was born than who our Medal of Honor veterans believe should be President of the United States.

And the icing on the cake was the live opportunity to blame Hillary (correctly) for the whole birther movement to begin with. Something NOW that will tarnish her campaign with the black vote, because her campaign DID start it, in fact someone who was "there" at the time, in a powerful position just tweeted that she "fired the rogue" who worked for the campaign who started it, something Hillary has known for years, while telling the public she had nothing to do with it and the press has been claiming the Hillary campaign had nothing to do with, which is completely false. They had everything to do with it, they started it.

Now it's been exposed!! Trump is brilliant. He created a scenario that flushed out the people who started the birther movement and it was Hillary Clinton's own campaign.

So now the plot thickens, will remain thick during the rest of the campaign and a major question of the first debate to Hillary will be: "did you know your campaign started the birther movement?"

If Clinton started the "birther" movement, then who was sustaining it? Didn't we have at least one endless thread here at this forum propping up and advancing discussion on the subject? Of course the whole thing was idiotic, and was carefully applied to obscure Obama's real problem which was his citizenship itself, called into question because his father was not a citizen.

If Clinton the Democrat started the "birther" movement, it doesn't much matter because it was Republicans who picked up the cause and advanced the issue.

And since when is Trump announcing Obama's place of birth going to shut up the "birthers"? What are they saying? Maybe we ought to hear from them here since they obviously post at this forum.

And furthermore, when Cruz had an audience for a nomination for the presidency, suddenly all the "birthers' went away. They were completely silent about the fact that Cruz was very definitely not born in the United States. No arguments ever presented against his nomination for this reason ever came up here at this forum. What happened?
