The protestors were also demanding an end to deportation of illegal aliens. It's hard to believe congress sits on their hands while illegals are being registered to vote and demanding rights they do not have. Hard to believe..............

I didn't hear the part about illegals demanding to vote. What I heard was that the illegals were marching to demand the federal government to immediately stop deporting illegal immigrants. What kind of B.S. is that, can't we even enforce our own laws.
Did you notice the American flags. I guess the pro-illegal advocates are finally getting their foot soldiers trained properly. Too bad the activists won't allow them to show their true feelings on national T.V. Guess they learned something from the last big march. It's all a show for the benefit of our lawmakers."The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing" ** Edmund Burke**

How timely! The article below was on the cover of our local paper in Waukegan, IL. My immediate thought too was -how do we know that they are legal?
Campaign to register new citizens to vote
By Ryan Pagelow
staff writer
With the slogan "Today we march, tomorrow we vote" an immigrant coalition plans to register thousands of new voters this summer. It hopes to build on the momentum of recent massive rallies in favor of immigration reform while Congress is debating what to do with the nation's 11 to 12 million undocumented immigrants.
By the November election, the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights plans to register 15,000 new voters and mobilize about 50,000 people to go to the polls. They are hoping to motivate potential voters among naturalized citizens and the U.S.-born children of immigrants.
"We're trying to instill the vote in parents so they'll start it and continue with their children," said Germain Castellanos, coordinator of the New Americans Initiative Democracy Project in Waukegan.
He is going door to door asking residents to register to vote in neighborhoods with large immigrant populations. He's also asking businesses that see a lot of Latino clients to participate by providing clients with information about how to register to vote.
"We're trying to have people register to vote where they wouldn't think about registering. We'll have volunteers outside of grocery stores, volunteers outside the bank to remind them a little bit to vote," Castellanos said. "I'm trying to plant the seed to get people involved in civic engagement."
Nationwide, the percentage of Latinos registered to vote — about 58 percent — lags behind the national average of 72 percent of the adult citizen population, according to a recent report from the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights. Only 42 percent of Latino children of immigrants, aged 18 to 24, registered to vote.
The Democracy Project is part of the New Americans Initiative which focuses on registering the estimated 404,000 immigrants eligible to become naturalized citizens in Illinois. In Waukegan there are 7,833 legal permanent residents who are eligible to become naturalized citizens.
"This is really going to affect Waukegan elections if it goes well," said Castellanos.
The recent marches have inspired many more immigrants like Rosa Medina of Waukegan to vote. Originally from San Luis Potosi, Mexico, she became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1983 when she was a teenager, but registered to vote for the first time last week.
"All the marches that we see taking place here and in Washington made me realize it really affects the people, the way we are living here. We need to vote to make changes," Medina said.
In the weeks prior to the November elections volunteers will call registered voters to remind them to vote. The project is also taking place in other suburban areas in the Chicago area that have large immigrant populations including Elgin, Joliet and Aurora.
Some of the barriers to becoming a citizen are limited English skills, attachment to home countries and the $400 application fee for low-income residents, said Catherine Salgado, a spokesperson with Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights.
"What we're trying to promote is the importance of changing immigration laws. Right now they are hurting the immigrant community and the only way to change that is to vote," Salgado said.
For more information about registering to vote if you are a U.S. citizen, 18 years old or older, who lives in Lake County, visit the county clerk's office at 18 N. County St., Waukegan, or call (847) 377-2410. Citizens may also apply to register to vote by mailing in an application which can be downloaded from www.co.lake.il.us/cntyclk.Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)
