Machete-wielding gang of migrants jailed for shop attack

A gang of small boat migrants have been jailed after taking part in a violent attack on a group of friends in a shop in Boscombe, Dorset.
Four Kurdish migrants from Iran and Iraq were sentenced to a combined 22 years at Winchester Crown Court after they had committed “roaming street violence” armed with machetes and knives.

Kurwan Ali, a Kurdish business owner, and three friends were attacked by a gang of 10 men, leaving one with life-threatening lung injuries after he was stabbed.
Hana Hassan, 22, was sentenced to seven years in prison, while Osama Qadir, 21, Dawan Mantik, 28 and Yosef Shaban, 24, received jail terms of six, five and four years respectively.

Sentencing them, Judge Paul Dugdale told them “it is not what we are about in this country”, adding that their future “in all likelihood lies within the Home Office”.
The incident is understood to have stemmed from a disagreement between Mr Ali and the two main instigators of the attack, Ahmed Omar and Rahel Omer, that took place at Bar So in Bournemouth in the early hours of Jan 27 last year.

A court was told that Omar and Omer “rallied the troops” and two days later arrived at Mr Ali’s shop in Boscombe accompanied by 10 people armed with machetes and knives, including the four defendants.
Mr Ali and three of his friends were subjected to a “ferocious and frighteningly violent attack” in which one of the victims, Sepan Qasim, was stabbed twice and suffered a collapsed lung. The other men sustained cuts and bruises after being kicked during the assault.
Local business owners Omar and Omer have not been seen since the incident and are believed to have fled to Kurdistan to escape the justice system. They had provided accommodation and work for the defendants.
All four of the sentenced men were migrants from Kurdistan who had arrived in the UK on small boats. Hassan’s address was given as the Britannia Hotel in Bournemouth, which is being used as accommodation for asylum seekers.

The four appeared at Winchester Crown Court charged with various offences including grievous bodily harm, violent disorder and the possession of violent weapons arising from “roaming street violence”. Six other defendants had previously been acquitted.
The defendants wore suits in the dock and showed little emotion during the sentencing, which followed a nine-week trial. They will serve two-thirds of their sentence in custody.

“The people of Boscombe just want to live their lives peacefully and do not want this sort of behaviour to take place,” said judge Dugdale. “People want to walk down the road without being scared.
“It is not what we are about in this country. It causes fear in the community and makes people scared to go out. People who carry out this sort of violence will have to deal with the consequences.
“This is not a violent country. It is a country where people can walk freely in the street, and we want to keep it that way.”
