Malcolm Shabazz, grandson of civil rights leader Malcolm X, is dead, according to the Amsterdam News. Malcolm X's life story was dramatized in the 1992 movie "Malcolm X" which chronicled his life with his wife Betty Shabazz.

The circumstances surrounding his grandson's death are unclear, but the U.S. Embassy has confirmed that Malcolm Shabazz, 28, is dead.

Shabazz is said to have been traveling with recently deported labor leader and activist, Miguel Suarez, according to Juan Ruiz. Sources are saying that Shabazz was attacked by robbers and thrown from a building in Mexico. He may have also been shot.

The death occurred on Thursday, May 9 in Tijuana or Mexico City. The exact city location has not been confirmed.

Family friend, Terrie M. Williams, also confirmed his death on Twitter: "I'm confirming, per U.S. Embassy, on behalf of family, the tragic death of Malcolm Shabazz, grandson of Malcolm X.Statement from family 2 come."

Shabazz' death comes on the heels of an FBI arrest in April as he was leaving for Iran, according to Eurweb.com.

Having put the manslaughter conviction that resulted in the death of his grandmother Betty behind him, Malcom Shabazz was majoring in Criminal Justice at a college in New York and writing a book.

Shabazz is survived by his mother and his two daughters.

The movie "Malcolm X" starring Denzel Washington still airs from time to time.

(CNN) -- The grandson of civil rights activist Malcolm X, Malcolm Shabazz, died in a Mexico City hospital after suffering an apparent beating, police told CNN.
Prosecutors are investigating the death as a homicide, police spokesman Octavio Campos said.
Police were called to the scene of an injured man at 3:30 a.m. Thursday one block south of Plaza Garibaldi, a rough but famous patch of Mexico City known for its mariachis.
Shabazz appeared to have been beaten, but had no wounds from other weapons, Campos said.
The 29-year-old was transported to Mexico City's Balbuena General Hospital, where he died later Thursday morning because of his injuries, he said.
The prosecutor's office said in a statement that Shabazz had been at "a place of recreation" and had been drinking beers that night.
"To all who knew him, he offered kindness, encouragement and hope for a better tomorrow," the Shabazz family said in a statement Friday. "Although his bright light and boundless potential are gone from this life, we are grateful that he now rests in peace in the arms of his grandparents and the safety of God."
A U.S. State Department spokeswoman was aware that a U.S. citizen had died in Mexico, but declined to comment further.
"I was saddened, stunned, shocked, to read about the murder of young Malcolm," former Georgia congresswoman Cynthia McKinney said. The former lawmaker had taken Shabazz under her wing and he had traveled with her to Libya on a trip.
"Many of my closest associates have personal memories of their time with him and of his efforts to reach out to them for help," McKinney said. "He was writing a book."

MEXICO CITYA judge on Saturday issued an order for the imprisonment of two waiters accused in the beating death of Malcolm Shabazz, grandson of civil rights activist Malcolm X, the Mexico City attorney general's office said.

The resolution begins the judicial process against David Hernandez Cruz and Manuel Alejandro Perez de Jesus, who worked at the Palace bar near Mexico City's popular Plaza Garibaldi. The men are accused of theft and homicide, and are being held in a Mexico City prison.

Prosecutors say Shabazz and a friend were lured into the bar by a young woman who made conversation with Shabazz in English. They were later presented with a bar tab worth $1,200 and a violent dispute ensued.

Prosecutors say the men who beat Shabazz to death not only punched and kick him but also used a bat or stick during the attack. Shabazz died in Mexico City hospital.

Hundreds gathered in Oakland Friday to remember the late grandson of slain civil rights leader Malcolm X.

More than 200 people attended a traditional Islamic service for the 28-year-old Malcolm Shabazz, who authorities say was beaten to death last week over a $1,200 bar bill in Mexico City.

The service featured plenty of prayer, songs, spoken word and tears. Many among the procession of speakers said while they initially connected with Shabazz because of his famous grandfather, they learned to appreciate a man they called "Young Malcolm" as a leader in his own right.

Despite troubles early in life, from setting a blaze in his grandmother's apartment that resulted in the death of Malcolm X's widow, to stints in juvenile hall and prison, mourners said Shabazz was seeking redemption. They say he had plans to write a memoir and another book denouncing youth violence.
