Physicist warns reform legislation now in Congress will increase threat to planet

A new study by a renowned physicist ties the immigration-reform bill in Congress to global warming, warning that the consequent increase in U.S. population poses an even greater threat to the planet's survival.

Albert A. Bartlett, a Harvard Ph.D. and professor emeritus of physics at the University of Colorado, explains each person in the U.S. is responsible, directly or indirectly, for emission of 23.8 tons of greenhouse gases annually.

"So if we are serious about reduction of U.S. emission of greenhouse gases in the hope of slowing or stopping global warming, then it is imperative that the first thing we do is to stop the U.S. population growth," Bartlett declared.

Bartlett emphasized that since immigration – most of it legal – is estimated to account for about three quarters of the present annual increase in the U.S. population, it is essential "we do everything possible to halt U.S. population growth quickly."

Bartlett, a member of the board of advisers of a non-profit group called Population-Environment BALANCE, claims U.S. population growth "violates the laws of sustainability," which include:

    * Population growth and/or growth in the rates of consumption of resources cannot be sustained.

    * The larger the population and/or the larger the rate of consumption of resources, the more difficult it will be to transform the population to the condition of sustainability.

    * A society which has to import people to do its daily work is not sustainable.

Bartlett further argues mass immigration also increases the nation's birth rate. According to the Center for Immigration Studies, immigration's annual contribution to population growth reaches nearly 90 percent if children born to recent immigrants are counted.

Bartlett emphasized efforts at improving efficiency in energy use cannot compensate for continued population growth.

"If there is no end to population growth in the U.S., it is unlikely that there will ever be a decrease in the annual emissions of global warming greenhouse gases by the United States."

A think tank in another of the leading developed nations, the UK, expressed a similar view in a report it issued this month urging Britons to have fewer children in order to help save the world from global warming.

"The greatest thing anyone in Britain could do to help the future of the planet," said John Guillebaud, co-chairman of Optimum Population Trust, "would be to have one less child."

Now wouldn't it be weird if we got this latest shamnesty to die with the help of global warming!
    Interesting twist.

Good point Jim, after all, remember that cow's "emissions" were contributing to the methane increase in the atmosphere? (yeah right)

It would be the same for illegals, especially those who love the refried beans and spices!

I can hear the OBLs cry about being blamed for global warming too. Time to tune those violins!
I agree the population growth should be slowed, maybe not "halted". That's a little extreme.

Most of our population growth comes from legal and illegal immigrants, as you all know. So, it would be a good thing for the U.S. if we stopped the illegal immigration for LOTS of reasons.

But, I think the way someone might look at it is "why should America have low population if other countries are crowded - who are THEY to have a good living situation when we are crowded into our countries and are poor"? There's always a sense that America owes the world, and we should not be doing well, if others are suffering.

People think we have room - although there are no jobs in those rural areas - everyone goes to cities, so the cities suffer.

I think more concerning than anything is how can you govern over 300 million people?! As we can see, it's not possible even now, let alone if we let more illegals in.

Some nimrods from the Sierra Club said "Well Americans should cut their consumption in half and only have one child, then we could welcome immigrants without impacting the environment." Of course they don't say a damn thing about California and many other states paying for poor immigrants to have up to eight children. Do these people really hate themselves and Americans or what?

Bowman, this kind of crap should tell everyone that man made global warming is a farce.
We have to be quite arrogant to think that man can cause that much change in our atmosphere.
