Police in Idaho were searching Monday for a gunman who shot and wounded a pastor outside his church Sunday afternoon, one day after he led a prayer at a rally for Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz.

Tim Remington was found with multiple gunshot wounds outside the Altar Church in Coeur d'Alene at around 2 p.m. local time Sunday. Remington's nephew Matthew and other church members told KREM that Remington was shot four times in the back as he walked to his car.

KREM reported that Remington was expected to make a full recovery.

On Saturday, Remington led a prayer at a rally for the Texas senator at a local fairgrounds. Idaho holds its Republican presidential primary Tuesday.

"Our prayers are with Pastor Tim, his family, and the doctors who are supervising his care," Cruz campaign spokeswoman Catherine Frazier told NBC News. "We pray for his full recovery and are thankful for the efforts of law enforcement to ensure the attacker is swiftly brought to justice."

Late Sunday, police identified the shooting suspect as 30-year-old Kyle Odom. KHQ, citing witnesses, reported that Odom attended Sunday services at the church, then waited in a car for Remington to leave the building before opening fire.

Authorities said Odom was last seen leaving the parking lot in a silver 2004 Honda Accord. He is described as having blond hair, blue eyes, standing approximately 6 feet tall and weighing about 170 pounds.

The motive for the shooting was still under investigation late Sunday. KHQ reported that Odom and Remington may have known each other.

KREM reported that members of the church gathered at the scene late in the afternoon to pray for Remington and his assailant.

"We just want to be here for everyone in our congregation. Be here for our pastor," one church member told KREM. "He opens his home to people.

He takes them in and lets them live in his home. All the people society has turned their backs on, he reaches out to them."

Ex-Marine Suspected of Gunning Down Idaho Pastor Has Vanished, Police Say

    by ALEX JOHNSON

As the manhunt expanded to other states, police said Monday night that they have no idea where an ex-Marine accused of shooting of a prominent Idaho pastor has escaped to.

"His whereabouts are completely unknown," Coeur d'Alene Police Chief Lee White said of Kyle Andrew Odom, 30, who is considered armed and dangerous.

White said at a news briefing late Monday afternoon that the trail went cold when Odom apparently drove west toward Spokane, Washington, and then south after senior pastor Tim Remington, of The Altar Church, was shot and critically wounded Sunday in the church's parking lot.

Remington, 55, was upgraded to fair condition Monday. He was shot six times after services Sunday afternoon, a day after he delivered the invocation at a rally for Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz.

White said the attack was "preplanned" and that Odom — who is believed to have previously shown up at the nondenominational evangelical church — was armed throughout the Sunday service, which he attended before heading out to the parking lot.

"I think our community as a whole got very, very lucky on Sunday," White said. "I think this could have been much worse."

White said no motive had been established, but he said Odom — a high-honors graduate of the University of Idaho who served four years in the Marine Corps — has a history of mental illness and is believed to have acted alone.

"I will tell you that some details surrounding Mr. Odom's planning are disturbing," White said, offering no further details.

The only lead that investigators have is video from the church's parking lot, which recorded the gunman driving off in a silver 2004 Honda Accord, White said.

He called the video "absolutely priceless."

White said Odom is armed and extremely dangerous, and he urged anyone who spotted Odom to avoid him and to call 911 immediately.

Remington, a prominent spokesman for conservative issues, delivered the opening prayer for Cruz, a U.S. senator from Texas who is among the leading candidates for the Republican presidential nomination, at a rally Saturday at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds.

Odom's family said it is "devastated by Sunday's events" and asked for privacy in a brief statement Monday afternoon.

"We are praying for Pastor Tim, his family and his continued recovery," the statement said. "We are also praying for Kyle's safe return and to get the help he needs. We love you Kyle!"

Cruz's campaign, meanwhile, told NBC News on Sunday that its prayers are with "Pastor Tim, his family, and the doctors who are supervising his care."

Suspect in shooting of Idaho pastor arrested outside White House

    Published March 09, 2016 FoxNews.com

The man suspected of shooting an Idaho pastor six times over the weekend was arrested outside the White House Tuesday evening, authorities said.

Kyle Odom, 30, was arrested by the Secret Service after he was seen throwing items over the White House fence. The Coeur d'Alene police department said the items included computer flash drives.

Odom, a former Marine, is accused of shooting Pastor Tim Remington outside his church on Sunday, the day after Remington gave the invocation at a weekend campaign rally for Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz. Authorities say there's no indication Remington's appearance with Cruz had anything to do with the shooting.

The Coeur d'Alene Police Department issued a warrant of attempted first-degree murder for Odom, who has no criminal record but does have a history of mental illness.

Earlier Tuesday, investigators said they had obtained a letter sent by Odom to his parents that also contained a flash drive. Documents on the drive indicated that Odom had targeted Remington and another parishioner at the Altar Church in Coeur d'Alene.

    KXLY reported
that Odom had claimed in a Facebook post hours before he was arrested that Remington was a Martian who had ruined his life.

Remington, 55, regained consciousness Monday night in a Coeur d'Alene hospital, said John Padula, the Alter Church's outreach pastor.

"He's whispering and talking to his family a little bit," Padula said Tuesday. "He's doing absolutely amazing. He gave me a thumb's up last night when I went in."

Remington, who is married and has four children, has no feeling in his right arm, Padula said.

Remington and his wife have been with The Altar Church for nearly two decades, and they have specialized in the treatment of drug and alcohol addiction, Padula said. The church has extensive programs, including in-patient rehabilitation, for addicts, Padula said.

Odom had no connection with the church before showing up before services early Sunday morning, Padula said. Coeur d'Alene Police Chief Lee White said Odom was armed while he attended services, and said that the violence could have been much worse.

Authorities said Odom waited for Remington outside the church after services, then shot him in the back as the pastor walked to his car. Police said Odom drove to the Spokane, Washington, area on Interstate 90 after the shooting, according to information from traffic cameras. He then turned south before they lost his trail.

Odom served in the Marines from 2006-2010, winning an Iraq Campaign Medal and other awards. He rose to the rank of corporal.

Odom later graduated from the University of Idaho with a degree in biochemistry.
