This does not surprise me. Alot of South Florida police departments are getting calls by people who are attempting to file their income tax and are learning that it has been done already by someone else. It does not matter if there is a refund or they have to pay.

As many as 200 fire and police officials in Oakland Park and another 200 in Delray Beach may have had their identities stolen, Broward Sheriff's officials said Friday.

At least 31 Oakland Park firefighters learned of the problem when they tried to file their federal tax returns. The IRS told them their refunds had already been mailed to a different address, said Assistant City Manager Horace McHugh.

"There was a breach somehow in the records," McHugh said. "Some portion of their personal information was…used for illegal and unscrupulous practices."

Oakland Park and Delray Beach use the same retirement plan administrator.

Firefighter and union president Slade Bruce said his refund was among those stolen.

"It's a few thousand dollars," he said. "Someone else has it."
