    mexican flag flown at school

    and another one

From KTRH 740AM Talk Radio in Texas - The Michael Berry Show:
    http://www.ktrh.com/pages/michaelberry.html

A school in Texas actually hoisted the flag of Mexico above the flag of the United States. A move that violates the US flag etiquette law.

A white student removed the Mexican flag and was suspended for three days by the administrators.

Yesterday, a listener’s son was offended that his school, Klein Collins High School, displayed the Mexican flag prominently. His mother called to complain, and the school wouldn’t return her call. The student took the flag down.

The school pitched a fit, reviewed the surveillance tapes, found the student, and suspended him for 3 days. AND he has to pay for the flag. In light of the SF story of students sent home for wearing the AMERICAN flag because it offended the Hispanic students, I thought you’d like to know about a story closer to home.

Right here in our community. Feel free to let the school know what you think. You pay their salaries.

Klein Collins High School (832) 484.5500. Assistant Principal handling the case: Mr. Shelly Dick. Seriously.

Call Mr. Dick and let him have it. The Superintendent is Jim Cain.

You realize, I assume, that if a student removed – or even burned – the AMERICAN flag, they wouldn’t do anything about it, I’ll bet.

Or feel free to flood them with emails:

This web article is not dated, but it looks like it's from today, and it looks like it pertains to this story:

Mexican flag flap rumors spin out of control
    Updated at 11:11 AM today

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Rumors are flying around the Houston area about a flap over a Mexican flag at a school, but the school district is saying the incident didn't happen the way the story is being told.

The initial story being passed around Houston, fueled by a radio show report, says that a student at Klein Collins High School removed a Mexican flag from a flagpole because it was being flown higher than a US flag. The student was allegedly then suspended for three days. But that's not what school officials say happened.

The Klein Independent School District issued a reponse on their website to what they call 'inaccurate allegations.' It reads as follows:

*Neither the Klein Independent School District nor any of its campuses has flown another country or state's flag on a pole outside of its facilities.
*Neither the Klein Independent School District nor any of its campuses has flown the American flag upside down.
*Neither the Klein Independent School District nor any of its campuses has displayed another country or state's flag in a manner that would dishonor or disrespect the American flag or the Texas state flag.
*It is unfortunate that one person's misinformation has caused such a disruption for our students.

According to Klein ISD Communications Director Trazana Halstead, a Mexican flag was displayed inside the building, with permission, by a member of the school's Spanish club as part of a Cinco de Mayo observance. Halstead says another student upset by the display removed the flag and stuffed it in a trash can. She adds that the school cannot comment on any discipline the student may have received.

The reports may have gotten initially confused with a protest from Montebello High School in California in March 2006, in which a Mexican flag was flown above an upside down US flag.

WOW, this is just a few miles from my home. Kline is a mostly white, upper middle class school district.

Here is an interview with the kids mother.

Here is the principal's email address:

Here is the letter and statement that was sent home to parents:

Here is the link to all of the email addresses for the Kline ISD Board of Trustees. I think that all deserve to hear our feelings too.

Here is my letter to the assistant principal, principal and board of trustees:

I just wanted to remind you as a taxpayer, community member and long time educator, this whole embarrassing incident could have easily been avoided. Public schools are federal/state institutions owned and paid for by the taxpayer’s of America and Texas. There is absolutely NO place in our public schools for displaying foreign flags or holding celebrations of any country other than Texas and America. Doing so is not only is a slap in the face to taxpayers, it opens the door to incidents like you just had. Allowing that Mexican flag to be displayed in the a public school on the day of a Mexican celebration shows bad judgment on the part of the school’s administration and only opened the door for problem like happened. Had one of you had the good judgment to say no, you could have avoided this type of embarrassment for not only your school but the district and community. Please see that in the future you remember who pays for your school and stick to only allowing the Texas and American flags to be flown in the school the taxpayers’ own.
