Mexican government sending millions to US to combat deportations

EL PASO, Texas — Mexico will devote $50 million to assist its citizens who face deportation from the U.S.

The money will be sent to the 50 Mexican consulates across the U.S.

Adriana Martinez, the consul for community service at the El Paso consulate told KFOX it would receive additional funding.

“It's going to be for the protection of Mexican nationals,” Martinez said.

The money could go toward defending Mexican nationals in immigration court who face deportation or toward community outreach projects.

Martinez said the consulate has been doing outreach with the Mexican community to educate them about U.S. laws and their rights as immigrants.

“We are trying to prepare them with the right documents that they might need in case there is a situation where they might not control,” she said.

Residents living in Ciudad Juarez had mixed reactions to Mexico’s plan.

Edward Jimenez said he thinks the money should go toward public schools or to improve housing.

“They should worry more about the stuff in Mexico. I think there's people [in El Paso] who can take action for themselves in the U.S.,” Jimenez said.

Marco Loera told KFOX he thinks Mexico should help protect migrants in the U.S.

“It’s support for the immigrant so they’re not alone regarding the deportations. I think it's support for them,” Loera said.

The Mexican government has not announced how much funding would come to El Paso or when it would arrive.
