This is no threat though....Mexico has done it.

And it's a very convenient strategy for them. They save face losing to the cartels. Leave the US to fight the battle on this side of the border. And Mexico still pockets how much.....1.5 billion?.....under Meridia. Oh, and let's not forget the huge profits Mexican government officials are raking in from the drugs and gun smuggling.

Mexico has only decriminalized the possession of user quantities. This is a far cry from loosing the cartels through total legalization.

True, but there's the rub, isn't it? Decriminalization legislation is rife with technicalities, loopholes, and trap doors at best.

In order to obtain quantities for personal use one must buy from the local merchant, who must purchase from his distributor, who must obtain his product from the producer.

The cartels have now become the producers and distributors of legal substances which pretty much eliminates the battles between themselves and the Mexican authorities.

However, we still have not legalized drugs and they need to get it into this country and through stepped up security. It doesn't take much to see that their violence will be turned on our LE which is now their only stumbling block. Anyone who seriously believes that Mexico is any way interested in stopping the flow of drugs into this country is only kidding themselves.

And, quite frankly, with obama being the big advocate for decriminalizing illicit drugs, it would be very interesting to know exactly what it was that he and Calderon discussed at their last meeting which took place just days before Mexico decriminalized.

One could easily speculate that once the violence ends in Mexico on the heels of this legislation but picks up on this side of the border we just might see obama use that to try and achieve the decriminalization he would like to see here.
