Mitt Romney: Donald Trump's 'hurtful, childish' comments will hurt the GOP

    By Eugene Scott, CNN

Updated 12:48 PM ET, Fri October 16, 2015

Watch Mitt Romney on Sunday's "State of the Union with Jake Tapper."

Washington (CNN)Despite Donald Trump's success in the polls, Mitt Romney said the Republican front-runner's "hurtful" and "childish" comments are going to make winning the primary and general election difficult for the GOP.

"Donald Trump has said a number of things which are hurtful and he has said that they were childish in some respects and I think will be potentially problematic either in a primary or in a general election if he were to become the nominee," Romney told David Axelrod on Thursday on his podcast "The Axe Files."

The 2012 Republican presidential candidate said Trump's comments about women and Hispanics are going to be the greatest challenge to overcome.

"Donald Trump is a big megaphone. And I think that some of the things he's said, particularly about Hispanics, will be problematic, certainly for him, if he were to go to the next stage, but for whoever our nominee is," he said. "Now if our nominee happened to be someone like Marco Rubio or Jeb Bush, who have strong Hispanic roots themselves and connections themselves, that might not be as big an issue."

Romney himself struggled to win Hispanic voters -- most visibly for his comments regarding "self deportation" -- and only collected 27% of the Latino vote, performing worse than Sen. John McCain and George W. Bush did in elections before him.

And even if Trump wins, he lacks the government experience needed to be one of "the best presidents," Romney said.

"I frankly think that it is helpful to have someone who has more extensive experience in government and in leadership roles, serving as the leader of our country. You go back a long time to find somebody who had not had any public sector service as a president," he added.

Romney said the success of the outsiders -- Trump, Ben Carson and Carly Fiorina -- suggests Republicans' disappointment with the establishment.

"It tells us that people in this country are very anxious for dramatic change and are not happy with what's happening in Washington. They want to see something happen. They want to see something get done," Romney said. "And one of Mr. Trump's capabilities is communicating that he can get things done and that's something which people want to see happen."

The only people that his comments about illegal aliens from Mexico has impacted are illegal aliens and their supporters. Most of them aren't legal voters so NO, his comments which were absolutely true will not hurt Trump at all or the GOP. Trump is winning the Hispanic vote, Mitt, that's the legal vote of people who are US citizens of the United States, who want illegal immigration from Mexico and everywhere else to STOP, the same as most sane Americans with 2 live brain cells still connected.

Donald Trump hasn't said anything hurtful to "women". He picks on Rosie O'Donnell because she picked on him first. He picks on Megyn Kelly because she used her position in the first debate to attack him. He picks on Carly Fiorina in the privacy of his 757 on an issue she has with her face, her look, her expression, something even all the pundits criticizing Trump about his comment, commented on themselves, saying "hmmmm, she needs to smile more", which is the "persona" for TV that Trump was talking about.

Mitt, when you lose an election because you're taped telling donors that you don't care about the 47% to convince them they don't matter and you LOST THE WOMEN VOTE by the broadest gender gap every recorded, then you need to SIT DOWN AND SHUT UP.

Why are people interviewing you to begin with?!

MCain/Palin and Romney/Ryan tickets gave us 8 years of O.

Hurtful was announcing big gas and oil can have our state parks for their reckless, greedy profits and build pipelines to EXPORT the poison. DUH - take our state parks, recreation areas, creature habitat, healthy eco-systems away and fill them with cancer causing chemicals, destroy pristine waters for corporate profits. Paleeze, get a grip!

Yes, they did, which gave us more free trade treason agreements and tens of millions more illegal aliens and surplus immigrants plus Obamacare, trillions more debt and complete instability in the Middle East and South Asia.

A complete fail, I would say.

All Americans need to unite behind Trump, big time, and Trump needs to put his personal views in File 13 on his "pro-life" deal and commit to uphold the Constitution and enforce the law, period, so all women and men who support them can feel good and comfortable about supporting our candidate, Donald J Trump. We need unions and working men and women everywhere to support a candidate that we all know not only wants to fix our country and bring our good jobs back home and send all ilegal aliens back to their homes, but also has the skill-set required to do it.

Like Trump or not, his well documented comments in the past do give many the impression that he feels women are beneath him.

One must consider the times and privileges of the New Yorker.

He seems to have rounded out very well for this current time period. "In It To Win It": is another slogan - "Make America Great Again" best I've heard in a long time. This country is very close to electing another Clinton, think of all the realities that go along with that and Republicans, pick yourself a winner, please for your party and for America.

There's an ole saying during the Gold Rush, California or Bust. For Republicans and America, it's the White House or Bust. It's really now or never. There won't be another Trump in our life-times. We need to seize the moment by grabbing this man in every way possible and railroading him straight to DC to straighten this out. There will be no harder working President. He will be on his job 24/7. He won't be off on Holidays or useless foreign adventures to see the sights at the expense of the American People. If he takes time to play golf, it will have a major purpose and be a huge negotiation over golf. And I seriously doubt he'll even do much of that. Trump likes to work, he truly loves figuring out problems, that is when he's happiest, that is when he feels fulfilled, he loves making things better when they can be. He's proven all of that over and over and over again.

He doesn't want to run a disturbed bureaucracy, he wants to fix it, so that it runs properly and efficiently where everyone does the job they're paid to do. Government is people, and people make mistakes, but in a Trump Administration, they won't make the same mistake twice. And he'll want to tell US all about all of it. He'll be the most Press-Conferenced most open President there ever was, because he can't wait to tell US what he fixed, what he's doing, and how well it's working. I bet he does one a day starting off. And can't you hear him now? He'll be telling these reporters how he did it, what problem he found and what he's doing to fix it, more than they'll want to hear or write about. But we'll be there, listening and enjoying the good news.

I'm so excited and so hopeful for the first time in a long, long time. I hope Republicans don't blow it. My parents told me for many years that Republicans had become their own worst enemies. Get it straight, Republicans, focus on the priorities, don't deter this enormous potential and great opportunity over issues that don't matter and are already settled law.
