N.J. Republicans souring on Christie for president, poll finds

TUFTONBORO, N.H. — Gov. Chris Christie's presidential bid gets no home state advantage from New Jersey Republicans, a new poll shows.

According to a Rutgers-Eagleton Poll released Thursday, Christie ranks behind five other GOP presidential contenders in Garden State state support from Republicans and GOP-leaning voters.

And his home base is shrinking.

The poll was released two months after a similar survey showed a majority of New Jersey voters said "presidential" is not a word that describes the governor. Then, Christie garnered 12 percent of support from New Jersey Republicans, behind billionaire businessman Donald Trump.

With Trump still leading in New Jersey at 32 percent of support from Republican and GOP-leaning voters, Christie — at 5 percent — now trails retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, tied at 13 percent, and U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, who's at 6 percent, according to the poll. Christie is tied with businesswoman Carly Fiorina and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.

"Other Republican candidates have been led by Trump in their home states' polls, but virtually all still come in second or third," said Ashley Koning, assistant director of the Eagleton Center for Public Interest Polling at Rutgers University.

"Christie no longer has any home state advantage," she said. "The voters who know him best blame not his competition but what Christie himself is doing, or not doing, for New Jersey."

Making matters worse, 60 percent believe Christie should end his campaign, compared to only 27 percent who think he should continue to run, according to the survey. Only 9 percent say Christie's prospects have recently improved.

On Tuesday, a Rutgers-Eagleton poll found Christie's home state approval rating continues to hover near historic lows.

A majority of New Jersey voters — 56 percent — disapprove of the job the governor's doing and nearly just as many — 55 percent — have a negative view of the governor, according to a Rutgers-Eagleton Poll released Tuesday. Only 35 percent of voters have a favorable opinion of Christie and 39 percent give him a favorable job rating.

The newest survey polled 935 adults from Oct. 3 to 10, including 781 registered voters. The registered voter sample has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.9 percentage points. The GOP subsample of 273 voters has a margin of error of plus or minus 6.6 percentage points.

You know, Trump leading by so much in so many of these early states makes you wonder how Fox News Poll had results of Trump at only 24% and Carson at 23%. That's highly suspicious. Much like that CNN poll awhile back. Very suspicious.
