New DSCC Ad Hits Thom Tillis on Women’s Health

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is going up with a new ad in North Carolina attacking Republican Thom Tillis on women’s health issues.
Tillis faces Sen. Kay Hagan, D-N.C. The race had been trending narrowly in Hagan’s favor, but last week the National Republican Senatorial Committee announced the party would invest an additional $6 million for the final few weeks. Republicans need to gain six seats to take control of the Senate, and they indicated they want this to be one of them.


The new ad, provided first to CQ Roll Call, slams Tillis for acting to “defund Planned Parenthod,” and for previously saying that businesses should be able to deny coverage of contraceptives to their employees.


“I’ve seen Thom Tillis’ record on women, and it’s horrifying,” says a young woman identified as Moira Downey.




“He doesn’t care about women, he would even make my birth control illegal. I’m angry that Thom Tillis doesn’t trust the women of North Carolina,” she says. “I don’t know who Thom Tillis represents, but it certainly is not me.”


The ad is part of a $9.1 million statewide buy the DSCC made in the beginning of August. It recently added $1 million to that buy, shortly after its Republican counterpart announced a its increased investment.


Tillis said in a September debate he supported making oral contraception available over the counter.
The race is rated is Tilts Democratic by the Rothenberg Political Report/Roll Call.
