Politicians ignoring polls

Have you noticed our representatives in Washington make most of their decisions not on principle or conviction, but on poll numbers? They usually wait to see which way the wind is blowing before they vote for or against new legislation. They defend themselves by proclaiming they were elected to do the will of their constituents and it is "democracy in action."

You haven't heard, nor will you hear, that line from our members of Congress and president when it comes to dealing with the illegal immigration threat to our nation's very existence. They ignore the polls. Protecting the "rights" of those who break our laws — and pose security, economic and health threats to our citizens — is a higher priority for our representatives than doing the will of as much as 80 percent of the electorate.

Why are the polls being ignored? These representatives are claiming to be acting on principle as they vote to grant amnesty to an estimated 20 million illegal aliens. (The often-repeated 12-million number was the estimate more than five years ago, and I suspect a few more have crossed since.) Is it principle that now animates Congress and overrides poll data? Is it principle that has our president quietly planning construction of a North American Free Trade Agreement international superhighway from the Mexican border, through the U.S. heartlands, to the Canadian border — with Mexican trucks and truck drivers replacing Americans?

No, it's neither principle nor conviction leading the Senate's Edward M. "Ted" Kennedy and John McCain, the House's Nancy Pelosi and the White House's President Bush. It's plain-old political power and greed that's motivating them and their parties: Democrats for the additional millions of votes they expect to garner, and wealth for the corporate globalists who owe allegiance to no nation.

Our leaders are saying, in effect: "Goodbye to the middle class; goodbye to English as our unifying common language; goodbye to American culture and tradition, and goodbye to a better future for our children and grandchildren."

And I say, "Goodbye to expedient public opinion polls. What do we know, anyway?"
