North Carolina - Bye Bye U.S. History & Founders

There was a discussion on Fox News that North Carolina is discussing the elimination of some of the history of the United States in Social Studies and History, in favor for more modern day discussions, that may include global warming, third world debt relief, etc. In high school, history would begin around 1877, and go forward. The exclusion of discussion about the founders was part of that which would be revised or eliminated.

On another note about schools and brainwashing, the SPLC (Southern Poverty Law Center) has lesson plans available to teachers and schools to affect the thinking of students in grades k-12. Why is that allowed? Why are they allowed to be part of school activities and to shape school learning? They cover things like acceptance of undocumented immigrants, the hard struggles of illegal aliens, the mean ole U.S. that stepped up enforcement, comparing illegal immigration to civil rights and slavery, and they include worksheets to ask students for answers to crafted questions. They also ask questions about what the students' textbooks say on certain subjects, probably to have a say in what is taught.

Congress, and state legislatures needs to tell the Southern Poverty Law Center to get out of the schools. How can parents know that this monkey business goes on? There is a map to show the schools that participated in an event sponsored by SPLC. Other groups pushing for amnesty were possibly involved too.

I absolutely agree. Just like this morning on FNC I saw an interview with a parent and some school administrator from the Berkley District. The parent, and many others, are understandably upset that the funding for the accelerated Science program is being cut.

Why? Because the money is going to be redirected. for the sake of "educational equality", to the classes for underachieving minority students.

It's simply "not fair" that not all children are equally able to participate in accelerated classes.

Whatever happened to everyone having things they are better at than others, for God's sake? Isn't that what makes for a well balanced society? Isn't that true diversity? When each person contributes their own unique strengths and talents to society as a whole in order to achieve a whole society?

They don't want our kids educated. They want them stupid, in continual despair, and beholden to the governmental gods.

Indoctrination & Revisionist Left Slanting History should never be allowed in any school. Parents should check their childrens History/Social Studies books and assignments. If you find objectional material, you should confront the school and alert other parents. Never take for granted that your childs school is teaching the right things.

Schools: U.S. History Out, Environment In
    Posted By Lee Ross On February 3, 2010 @ 1:34 PM In Politics, U.S. | 5 Comments

Change often leads to controversy and that is certainly the case in North Carolina where an effort to revamp the state's education system has some people outraged that high school students will not learn enough American history.

The formula for teaching American history has been pretty simple. Start at the beginning and go forward. But a new proposal under review in North Carolina [1] threatens to disrupt that standard teaching philosophy.

"If our students don't know what happened in world history, and if they don't know what happened in U.S. history from George Washington's presidency all the way up through the Civil War, then they will not be able to grasp the big picture," said Mike Belter, a Social Studies teacher in North Carolina.

The state's on-going curriculum review hits all subjects but it's the proposed changes for high school students learning social studies that have provoked fears. Under the new guidelines, students will graduate without learning enough about world history and key parts of American history including Abraham Lincoln, westward expansion or much else that happened before 1877 when Reconstruction ended, critics say.

"We are certainly not trying to go away from American history. What we are trying to do is figure out a way to teach it where students are connected to it. Where they see the big idea. Where they are able to make connections and draw relationships between parts of our history and the present day so the students who see it as relevant," said Rebecca Garland of the N.C. Department of Public Instruction.

Right now, high school students learn world history in the ninth grade, civics and economics in the tenth and the entirety of U.S. history in the eleventh grade. Under the proposed change, all ninth graders wouldn't study world history. Instead, they''ll have to take a course called Global Studies focusing on the modern issues like the environment.

Tenth graders will still get Civics and Economics, while the junior year U.S. history class would start in 1877. State officials say events prior to that year will be taught before high school and also incorporated into the sophomore year Civics class.

Education officials acknowledge this is a big change but believe it will allow them to connect with a standard of teaching based on a new national initiative called called Common Core which emphasizes standards to help prepare students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in college and careers and to be prepared to compete globally.

"The whole notion of the common core is fewer, clearer and more in depth standards. So that our students remember what's important," Garland said.

" I'm all for a global outlook but it should not be at the expense of American history and learning about American institutions and ideas. And unfortunately this curriculum does just that," said Terry Stoops, an Education Expert and member of the John Locke Foundation.

North Carolina officials are quick to emphasize that the proposal is just that--a proposal. And they are encouraging feedback from teachers and the public about the plan.

"Where they see the big idea" ? I thought the big idea in American history was what happened BEFORE 1877: The settlement of the colonies; the various wars including the French and Indian War (related by good teachers to World History and the various wars in Europe---a kind of justification of the founding fathers admonition to avoid foreign entanglements); the estrangement with England; the Declaration of Independence; the Revolutionary War; the Articles of Confederation; the US Constitution; the War of 1812; the Louisiana Purchase; the Alien and Sedition Act; the rift between slave and non-slave states; the Missouri Compromise; the Dred Scott case; the Civil War and Reconstruction. How in the world could anyone, especially a high schooler, possibly put what is happening today into perspective without any knowledge of these key events. Moreover, any teacher worth his or her salt can make this relevant to today's students. In fact, that should be a standard for tenure. Any teacher who cannot should not be in the classroom.

Of course the answer is that the communists do not want today's youth to understand the principles on which this nation is founded. They don't want the concept of a smaller central government and states' rights to even surface. They do not want any of us to be individuals....the needs of the group come first.

In Pennsylvania where I was raised we were not only taught American History from the beginning, it was also state law that we had to be taught state and local history too. I have always thought this was a great idea because we could focus details that were not in regular history texts, and learning the history of my county and township was fascinating to me.

I hope the residents of North Carolina kick this idea into the gutter where it belongs.
