Nov 17, 1880 - A Treaty is signed which grants the U.S. government the right to regulate, limit or suspend, but not absolutely prohibit immigration of Chinese laborers whenever in its opinion their coming to the U.S. or their residence there in, affects or threatens to affect the interests of that country or to endanger the good order of the said country. Two years after this Treaty was signed, the Chinese Exclusion Act was passed into law.
