CAMPO - An investigation is under way into the slaying of a U.S. Border Patrol agent who was shot in the head in Campo near the Mexican border while tracking either drug smugglers or illegal immigrants in the darkness, authorities said.

The shooting was reported about 9:15 p.m. Thursday on Shockey Truck Trail southeast of the San Diego Sheriff Department's Campo substation, according to the Sheriff's Department.

The agent was working with other agents to track suspected illegal immigrants or drug smugglers when the group being followed dispersed and the agent went off into the darkness by himself, said Border Patrol agent Daryl Reed.

A short time later, the agent was found lying gravely injured on the ground, Reed said.

Four engines, paramedics and a medical helicopter were dispatched to the area, but the agent, who was shot in the head, was declared dead at the scene, Cal Fire Battalion Chief Nick Schuler said.

FBI Special Agent Darrell Foxworth said his agency is investigating the incident, along with the Sheriff's Department, the Border Patrol and the U.S. Attorney's Office.

The name of the agent was withheld pending family notification.

No other information on the shooter was immediately released
