THE FOLLOWING IS MY POSITION ON GOVERNOR SPITZER’S POLICY CHANGE REGARDING ***NEW YORK STATE DRIVER'S LICENSE***

Re: Illegal Immigrants- Governor Spitzer’s Driver’s License Policy
    Changes

    Dear Mr. (Zeezil):

Thank you for your recent correspondence regarding Governor Spitzer’s
plan to allow undocumented immigrants the opportunity to obtain a New
York State Driver’s License without providing a valid Social Security
number. This issue has recently stirred up great emotions amongst
constituents and elected officials alike due to the negative and
overreaching consequences the policy would have on the security of New
York State. I have introduced two bills (A.9468 and A.9453) in the New
York State Assembly regarding this issue which are both in direct
    opposition of the Governor’s policy.

Bill A.9468 would prohibit the Commissioner of the Department of Motor
Vehicles from issuing non-driver identification cards to applicants who
do not submit satisfactory proof of legally authorized presence in the
United States. It requires New York State driver’s license applicants
who are ineligible for a Social Security number to provide proof of
such, and also provide unexpired proof that he or she is legally
authorized to be in the United States. The counterpart bill in the New
York State Senate has already passed on October 22, 2007. I hope to pass this legislation as soon as Session resumes.

Bill A. 9453 would require a new subdivision in which the Commissioner
of the Department of Motor Vehicles must require that all applicants
provide his or her social security number or documents establishing
legal status that were issued for one or more years and having at least
six months of lawful status remaining. In addition, a formal letter or
ineligibility from the Social Security Administration is required. Any
individual who does not provide a Social Security number or formal
letter of ineligibility from the Social Security Administration will not
    obtain a driver’s license.

Governor Spitzer’s recently announced change from a
    “one-license-fits-allâ€

If I'm not mistaken, Assemblywoman Fields is a Democrat. I'm glad that people on both sides of the isle are interpreting this as being ridiculous. Anyway, I'm not positive but I do believe that she is a Democrat.
