powered by SphereCHICAGO (Reuters) - Barack Obama said on Saturday Americans would start changing the kinds of cars they drive if gasoline prices continue to climb and said he owned a hybrid vehicle, though he doesn't drive it much.

Obama, an Illinois senator and the front-runner for his party's presidential nomination, has made fighting climate change a key issue of his campaign, and as fuel prices soar, he has repeatedly called on car makers to increase fuel efficiency standards.

Without specifically telling Americans to stop buying gas-guzzling sport utility vehicles, the Illinois senator said higher fuel prices would lead to a shift.

"We've seen that this quarter. People are changing their behavior and we've seen a slump in the sales of SUVs and big trucks and a drastic spike in cars both medium size and small," he told reporters on his campaign plane.

Obama put responsibility on car makers to make vehicles more fuel efficient.

"They've done a better job of investment than they have in the past. There's still more work to do, and the federal government should help them do it," he said.

Obama, who spends most of his time traveling around the country on a plane and in cars driven by his Secret Service agents, does have a car of his own that is environmentally friendly.

"These days I don't drive much," he said. "I bought a hybrid, but we keep it in the garage mostly."

I am sure you are aware. I am just totally disgussed. I have lost faith in people. Are you the minority?

It takes a somewhat significant income to afford a new hybrid in the first place, and that income may be earned in a career that contributes to pollution anyway. For the average income owner, the fuel savings are offset by the pollution arising from the production and transportation to the market of the vehicle. I suppose the poor whites in his district will still have to drive their used gas "guzzler."

When autos start reaching 100 mpg---as they should--and they are at a price level that modest incomes can budget for, then it is going to really be a boon to getting us off foreign oil.

Why limit it to being "poor whites"? This rule applies to all poor people doesn't it?

It's pretty obvious our gov't is NOT serious about clean energy. I remember seeing electric powered concept cars when I was a kid, and this was before car phones(now replaced by cell phones). The main down side was the size of the batteries and how long it took to charge them. All we have to do is look at the way cell phones are evolving to see our gov't isn't serious about our energy future.

This may be the only thing obamasnob has ever said that i half way agree with . The government tried hard in the 70's to educate people and get the big 3 to make efficient autos. No one would listen . Big 3 still made heavy gas guzzlers and people bought'em up like it's all a joke.

Hybrid cars are way to expensive for regular people . It's a joke and a mean one also .

You do realize businesses operate by giving consumers WHAT they want. People wanted those cars or else they wouldn't be built. Junk food is still being made because people want it. Is it the job of govt. to force people to eat or drive what they don't want? But it's happening more and more.

You can buy a Prizm (clone of a Corolla) that gets gas mileage about as good as a hybrid, for half the cost. But a Prius Hybrid conveys to people that you are concerned about the enviorment, it's a status statement, because unlike other Hybrids, it LOOKS like a hybrid.....odd looking.

You people are missing the point. You are not looking at a big picture.

Obama is for CONTROL, not a solution. Socialism. He is using this as an opportunity.

I guess you are not into drilling. Do you know why we are paying $4 per gallon? Do you know why ethanol fuel cause cost per pound of beef and chicken to go up? Do you know it cause more pollution to make ethanol?

Do you know China and India will continue to use more gas than American citizen will ever use? Do you know environmental idiots are mainly responsible for the high oil prices we are paying now?

The media sure did a great job because you think Obama knows what's best.

Do to this fact, any consumption we in America save, will be eaten up by these 2 country's alone. It's called free trade, don't ya love what our corrupt leaders are doing to it's legal citizens! I am all for 30 - 40 million illegal's leaving through attrition, and that's quite a consumption savings there.

I read where 1/3rd of the illegal's in this country live in California! We need to start controlling that state and get some raids going.
