PELOSI ‘DISAPPOINTED’ OVER TRUMP’S DEAL WITH MEXICO — ‘THREATS AND TEMPER TANTRUMS ARE NO WAY TO NEGOTIATE’

6:29 PM 06/08/2019 | POLITICSDavid Krayden | Ottawa Bureau Chief

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi derided President Donald Trump Saturday for leveraging potential tariffs to convince Mexico to strengthen its border as more “threats and temper tantrums.”
Pelosi, who has been engaging the president in a war of words all week, suggested there was little diplomatic gain in the brief stand-off or the deal itself, the Washington Examinerreported.

After saying he would impose a 5% tariff on imports if Mexico did not act to fortify its border with the United States and prevent further illegal border crossings, Mexico agreed after a flurry of negotiations and Trump declared victory Friday night. But it was no victory according to Pelosi.
“President Trump undermined America’s preeminent leadership role in the world by recklessly threatening to impose tariffs on our close friend and neighbor to the south,” Pelosi told reporters. “Threats and temper tantrums are no way to negotiate foreign policy.”
Earlier this week, Pelosi reportedly said that she wasn’t keen on impeaching the president because she’d rather see him “in prison.” Trump fired back at Pelosi, saying he was aghast that she would make such statements while he was out of country on an official visit to Great Britain and called the speaker a “nasty, vindictive, horrible person” while coining a new nickname for the congresswoman: “Nervous Nancy.” (RELATED: Pelosi Says Trump ‘Is Goading Us To Impeach Him’)
But the Trump administration believed it had to take action given the escalation of the border crisis and the projection from the Department of Homeland Security that more than a million people will be detained at the U.S.-Mexico border in 2019, if the current trends remain unchanged.

The negotiated deal with Mexico is potentially far-reaching.
According to a State Department news release:
Mexico will take unprecedented steps to increase enforcement to curb irregular migration, to include the deployment of its National Guard throughout Mexico, giving priority to its southern border. Mexico is also taking decisive action to dismantle human smuggling and trafficking organizations as well as their illicit financial and transportation networks. Additionally, the United States and Mexico commit to strengthen bilateral cooperation, including information sharing and coordinated actions to better protect and secure our common border.
The deal also requires that illegal immigrants entering the United States from Mexico “will be rapidly returned to Mexico where they may await the adjudication of their asylum claims.”
The latter requirement left Pelosi “deeply disappointed” and she said sending illegal refugees back where they came from “violates the rights of asylum seekers under U.S. law and fails to address the root causes of Central American migration.”

Democrats Bash Trump For Forcing Mexico To Crack Down On Illegals Storming U.S. Border

by Joseph Curl June 8, 2019 457 Comments

Some things you just can’t make up.

After President Trump played hardball with Mexico, forcing the U.S. neighbor to crack down on the flow of foreigners to the U.S. border, Democrats bashed the president.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) released a statement Saturday morning saying Trump had “undermined America’s preeminent leadership role in the world” by threatening to impose tariffs on Mexico if it didn’t control the flow of foreigners.

“We are deeply disappointed by the Administration’s expansion of its failed Remain-in-Mexico policy, which violates the rights of asylum seekers under U.S. law and fails to address the root causes of Central American migration,” Pelosi said. “Threats and temper tantrums are no way to negotiate foreign policy.” The Remain-in-Mexico policy that Trump expanded calls for foreigners to be held there, rather than tyhe U.S., as they await asylum hearings.
Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said that since Trump has supposedly solved the problem, he no longer has to keep talking about illegal immigration.
“This is an historic night!” Schumer wrote on Twitter. “@realDonaldTrump has announced that he has cut a deal to ‘greatly reduce, or eliminate, Illegal Immigration coming from Mexico and into the United States.’ Now that that problem is solved, I’m sure we won’t be hearing any more about it in the future.”
The hilarious but pessimistic Schumer had earlier predicted Trump would fail to achieve a deal with Mexico.

“Unlike the president’s half-baked plan to impose tariffs on Mexico, Democratic proposals do not threaten the U.S. economy When the president inevitably retreats from his tariff threat which may be as soon as this afternoon, we should proceed to these commonsense policies instead,” he wrote Wednesday.
Trump on Saturday hailed the deal reached with Mexico to help shut off the flow of migrants to the U.S. Under the deal, Mexico agreed to take “unprecedented steps” to stop the flow, while the U.S. backed off plans to impose tariffs.
“Mexico will try very hard, and if they do that, this will be a very successful agreement for both the United States and Mexico,” Trump wrote on Twitter.
    Trump also hit Pelosi.
“Nervous Nancy Pelosi & the Democrat House are getting nothing done. Perhaps they could lead the way with the USMCA, the spectacular & very popular new Trade Deal that replaces NAFTA, the worst Trade Deal in the history of the U.S.A. Great for our Farmers, Manufacturers & Unions!” he wrote.
And Trump thanked negotiators from both sides. “I would like to thank the President of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, and his foreign minister, Marcelo Ebrard, together with all of the many representatives of both the United States and Mexico, for working so long and hard to get our agreement on immigration completed!”
