They did it to themselves. L.A. is an Amnesty International city. Anyone who can't see parallels with these stats and what could happen to the rest of the country just isn't paying attention.

NOT from LA times story. That sorry rag wouldn't run anything anti-illegal. This is circulating via emails. Though the brunt of it is true enough. See the urban legends page above.

I wonder why the Snopes author did not ALSO include in the post below the benefits we now all know, as a result of the Senate debate, that they DO receive and the fact that with a stolen SS card/ID, they can indeed collect these benefits they are "ineligible for." Where is the statistic on numbers of stolen SS card numbers each year?
    from Snopes:
"Less than 2% of illegal aliens are picking our crops but 29% are on welfare
Although illegal aliens are not generally eligible to collect public welfare benefits, an illegal alien may receive benefits under the Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) and Food Stamps programs on behalf of his or her U.S. citizen child. (Any child born in the United States is considered a U.S. citizen, regardless of the parents' immigration status.) A 1997 General Accounting Office (GAO) report determined that in 1995 households headed by illegal aliens received a total of $700 million in AFDC benefits and $430 million in Food Stamps."

Sorry for the post. I did get it from an email, and thought it was true.
But then taxpayers "are" subsidizing way to many of these law breakers.

The CIS report concluded that households headed by illegal aliens imposed more than $26.3 billion in costs on the federal government in 2003 (the study didn’t even address the costs imposed upon the states). The same illegal alien households paid only $16 billion in taxes, resulting in a net fiscal deficit of $10.4 billion, or $2,700 per illegal alien household.

Among the largest costs were Medicare, or the cost of free medical care to uninsured illegal aliens (98.9% estimated uninsured) of $2.5 billion, $2.2 billion in food assistance programs such as food stamps, WIC, and $1.6 billion for free school lunches to the children of illegal aliens, plus $1.4 billion in federal aid to schools who educate the children of illegal aliens.

Two-thirds of illegal aliens lack a high school diploma. The prime reason that they create a federal deficit is low to non-existent education. The result is lower wages, and less tax payments.

On the average the costs that illegal aliens impose on federal deficits are less than half that of other American households, but their tax payments are only one-fourth that of other households.

Many of the costs associated with illegal aliens are due to their American born children who are given U.S. citizenship status at birth, and allow the illegal alien household to take advantage of welfare programs that they would not otherwise be eligible for.

If all illegal aliens were to be given amnesty and began to pay taxes, and use services, like other households headed by legal aliens with the same educational levels, the estimated annual net fiscal deficit would increases from $2,700 per household to $7,700 per household, for a total annual cost of $29 billion.

Costs increase dramatically because illegal aliens with legal status can access government benefits that they would not otherwise qualify for. Legalization of these illegal aliens would increase tax payments by 77%, but the average costs would increase by 118%.

Illegal immigration is a burden on the taxpayer. The costs of illegal immigration to the taxpayer are numerous, but the largest costs are education of their children, emergency medical care and incarceration for those arrested for crimes. Despite being ineligible, some illegal aliens also get welfare the same way they get jobs: with identity documents falsely identifying them as U.S. citizens. In addition, if they have U.S.-born children, they may collect welfare assistance in the name of those children. The annual net cost of illegal immigrants (after subtracting their tax payments) to the American taxpayer is likely to be more than $45 billion. One recent study of the net fiscal “Costs of illegal immigration to Californians” estimated the partial costs at $10.5 billion in California alone.

Defens the Heritage Foundation puts the cost at 1/2 trillion the first 10 years if this amnesty passes. The 10 years after that are too high to calculate because their families will be eligible for any and all benefits. The Mexican population will be increased by 193 million in 20 years. We will be ATZLAN.
I don't just count the monetary cost. What about the tax on our way of life . Try getting a picnic table (if you'd even want one these days) in Zilker park in Austin or Breckenridge park in San Antonio. I'm sure that every town in the southwest has the same problem.
Send your congressman a brick and say use this to build the wall.
