Our movement miscalculated about McCain. We thought he was a goner because of how his numbers dropped. We overestimated GOP voters, or at least those 64% that voted for McCain without knowing the truth about his stances on immigration.

The anti-illegal immigration vote was split among four other candidates.

This combined with inaccurate knowledge among those that voted for McCain led to his victory.

I'm still amazed how McCain pulled this off. I'm suspicious or maybe people were misinformed as mentioned.

Just this morning I read in the paper here he isn't getting anywhere near the contributions from his party in this state that Bush got and this is a big Republican area.

Excuse me, I said from the begining we should be watching McCain, but thats neither here nor there we now have him.......I do know his one liner has fooled alot of Americans...."I got it, I got it, the people want the borders closed", and instead of elaborating on the rest of where he stands, he leaves it at that or says very little so in peoples minds they really think and believe the fool "Got it".

People don't listen, most of all they do not realize the impact that nearly 30 to 38 million people getting citizenship will have on the United States or their lives....everything from the affect on Social Secutity System to them qualifing for welfare and everything else from that day forward.

Come on they still believe even though 7 years have passed that there are 12 million illegals in this country, even after the border is still wide open and only maybe 1 persent illegal population is being arrested and deported.

All I can do is shake my head...

Even scarier Sosad is that McCain constantly spouts he wants the "border secured first" implying that after the borders are claimed to have been secured (which would be soon after a few more show raids), he will push for massive pathway amnesty.

We want the borders secured period, with no form of amnesty!

When emotion and agendas hijack the debate...
Posted by --Blue Girl at 4/01/2008 11:09:00 AM

...you end up with foam-flecked insanity and spear-carrying nativists fueled by the rantings of Lou Dobbs and Tom Tancredo.

Witness the current immigration hysteria about immigration from Latin American. Lou Dobbs has been lauded as a hero of the working class and even inspired talk among the crowd he plays to about a presidential run, and "immigration" consistently polls near the top of voters concerns. Funny thing is, when polls are conducted using neutral language, it turns out that voters are, as a whole, are not only pretty damned clueless about the issue, they have no idea what their candidate's actual position even is.

The Center for Immigration Studies commissioned Pulse Opinion Research to conduct a poll of voters who had either voted in a primary or attended a caucus. The sample size was 1,276 , and the polling was conducted over March 12 and 13 (full .pdf here).

    Among the findings:

Only 34 percent of McCain voters, 42 percent of Clinton voters, and 52 percent of Obama voters correctly identified their candidate as favoring eventual citizenship for illegal immigrants who meet certain requirements.

Of McCain voters, 35 percent mistakenly thought he favored enforcement that would cause illegals to return home, another 10 percent thought he wanted mass deportations, and 21 percent didn’t know his position.

Voters often held different positions from the candidate they supported. Only 31 percent of McCain voters had the same immigration position as he does. For Clinton voters, 45 percent shared her position; 61 percent of Obama voters shared his position.

This lack of knowledge, coupled with disagreements with their candidates’ positions, makes it very difficult to draw any conclusions about the fact that all three remaining candidates favor legalization for illegal immigrants.

Whoever wins the presidency will face significant opposition to giving eventual citizenship to illegal immigrants. Just 25 percent of Republican and 50 percent of Democratic primary/caucus voters said they would support such an effort.

Pro-enforcement voters have a greater intensity of views than supporters of legalization. Among Republicans, almost nine out ten who favored causing illegals to return home said they strongly supported that view; on the other hand, fewer than half of Republicans who backed legalization strongly supported that view.

This greater intensity also exists among Democrats. Of Democrats who favored causing illegals to return home, more than seven out of ten strongly supported that view; on the other hand, fewer than six out of ten who favored legalization strongly supported that view.
Now, I don't have a dog in the immigration fight. Even when I was working, my job wasn't in jeopardy. Scientists don't sneak across the border and displace American bench techs. But I find the disconnect between voters and reality more than a little disconcerting.

It is time to inject some reality and common sense into the debate. I just wish I knew how to do that.

Here's what Mark Krikorian from the CIS wrote about this in the National Review Online:

Poll: You Can Fool Some of the People All of the Time [Mark Krikorian]

A new survey I commissioned demonstrates how McCain's malarkey about supporting enforcement has succeeded in duping a significant number of voters. The poll (complete results are here) found that only 34 percent of people who voted for McCain in the primaries and caucuses knew that he favored a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants (the word "amnesty" never appeared in the survey questions). Meanwhile, 35 percent of his voters thought he favored attrition of the illegal population through enforcement, 21 percent didn't know his position, and (this is my favorite) 10 percent thought McCain's position on illegal immigration was "a program of mass roundups and deportations." What's more, 58 percent of McCain voters said that, regardless of who was elected president, they themselves would oppose legislation to legalize illegals.

The moral of the story: McCain's nomination does not represent a mandate for open borders.

The reason that those opposed to illegal immigration are so energized and those in favor of Amnesty are less energetic and fewer in number is because our side is right and the opposition is morally, legally, ethically, WRONG and they know it deep down.
