Political Football and Immigration Reform: Is the GOP Playing Games With Our Economy?
    December 1, 2009 · Leave a Comment
Another great post from our guest blogger, Robert Gittelson.

Last week people across the country celebrated the beloved American holiday of Thanksgiving, hundreds of millions of proud Americans, (some 12,000,000 or so being undocumented, but American none-the-less), opened their homes to friends and family, feast on turkey, and of course, watch football.

It is that other favorite American Pastime – political football – that is on my mind, as I write this article. You see, earlier this week, in response to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano’s speech at the Center for American Progress, the Republican anti- Comprehensive Immigration Reform starting team decided to suit up, and get in the game. On November 20th, they wrote a letter to Sec. Napolitano that attempted to explain why, in their narrow minded opinion, now was not the time, (nor would there ever be a time), for Comprehensive Immigration Reform. The letter was signed by 12 Republican Restrictionist Senators, (their starting 11, plus a punter – although one could argue convincingly that they are all punters).

It is in the spirit of continuing this football metaphor, that I reference a very good article by Mary Giovagnoli at Immigration Impact.
In the article, she takes the Restrictionist arguments to task and labels their letter thusly: “It’s a playbook for the coming year, showing how to make points that are long on emotion and short on facts.â€

    Great find, topsecret10!
The undocumented remaining at companies with jobs may not be the best workers--but they are the cheapest. For any company, all that counts is the bottom line.
As far as settling down for football, the majority probably watched some replay of the soccer matches between Italy and Brazil on the Hispanic stations.

Well, IDIOT, right there is the problem. They are NOT Americans! They are criminals, and it's an insult to lump them together with others who have abided by the law to become Americans. This entire article is loaded with nothing but mindless garbage and false facts.

If they are that valuable here think of the even greater loss they pose to Mexico.
I support enforcement and see its lack as bad for the 3rd World as well. Remittances are now mostly spent on consumption not production assets. Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

It is immoral to encourage illegals to work for slave wages and not to work to improve their lives in their native countries.

    Illegal aliens as "best" workers.

We all know the concept of "hidden" costs in manufactured and service items. For those that don't let me explain. with a few examples:
    1. You buy a beautiful handmade rug made by native peoples somewhere. The item was made by kids in desperate slave-like conditions where years of toil ruined eyesight, posture, and normal childhoods (kind of like our own children who worked in coal mines in the USA before laws were passed).
    2. You buy vegetables, flowers, fruits grown and harvested in Mexico or Latin America by old people, under educated, or the sick and infirm... made so by years of brutal working conditions.
    3. You buy a T.V., electronic gadget, or appliance made in Mexico in maquilladoras by girls and mothers who are exploited for sex, their fear of hunger etc. .. for mothers, their kids often go unsupervised and un parented.

O.K., all of the products and services of peoples' work "cost" the workers something of value.... But, you cannot see this directly when you go to WalMart.

The reason Mexicans and other illegal alien workers are "best" is because they are culturally used to being exploited and treated like slaves. Since they are used to employer abuses and bad working conditions they will not complain and even feel grateful to have a job. Now, the hidden costs:
    1. They may become bitter and resentful in time as they awaken to the unfair treatment;
    2. Their children will become bitter and resentful at the injustices of the (mod edit) and react by doing negative things such as poor school performance, joining gangs or dealing or using drugs.
    3. Workers will get "sick" from bad working conditions and abuse of their health etc.

So, when illegals get hurt or resort to crime or join radical movements.. that we will have to pay for... IT IS THE PRICE we pay. Not so cheap, huh?

It took this country over 200 years to get where it is today, and we didn't get there by running off to another country to make somebody else's lives miserable and demanding rights we weren't entitled to. We stayed right here and we fought for what we have today, bad working conditions and all. If the illegal aliens want a better life, the place to work for it is right there in their own country, just like we did, instead of busting in illegally and thinking they're entitled to just take what we have fought for. If they don't start standing up in their own countries, these countries are never going to change, and the flow of illegal aliens coming here will be endless.

Exactly, and one has to ask why Mexico sends their best off to the U.S.A.
carrying drugs for the drug cartels instead of keeping their sharpest knives in their own drawers. Good point, Richard.
