Pro support rally in Phoenix today

Civil-rights activist, Pearce plan summit on migrant issues

    .

Lawmakers and people from across the country are expected to spend the day at the state Capitol today discussing illegal immigration and the 14th Amendment.

Sen. Russell Pearce, R-Mesa, and Ted Hayes, a Los Angeles activist for civil rights and the homeless, are hosting a daylong National Immigration Policy Summit. About 200 registered participants are expected to attend, at a cost of $50 each. Registration is closed; the summit is not open to the media.

The summit ends at 4 p.m. and will be followed by a Stand With Arizona Support Rally across the street, at Wesley Bolin Plaza. The rally is free and open to the public.

Hayes said there are two goals for the day: help lawmakers from other states implement legislation similar to Senate Bill 1070 and turn the battle over illegal immigration from a race issue back into a legal issue.

"If anybody knows racism in this country, it's we Black people," he said. "What Russell Pearce and Gov. Jan Brewer and Sheriff Joe Arpaio are doing isn't racist. It's the law."

Hayes called Pearce "the Abraham Lincoln of our time." He said he and Pearce will talk about the 14th Amendment, which grew out of the Civil War and guarantees citizenship to "all persons born or naturalized in the United States." It has been applied to give citizenship to children born in the U.S. regardless of the status of their parents.

"Illegal immigrants are using the birthright of emancipated slaves in this country," Hayes said. "We've come to Arizona to take back our legacy and defend Arizona's right to defend themselves from an illegal-alien invasion."
