Make no mistake: Radio Sputnik is spewing Russian propaganda

The July 13 Metro article “Kremlin to K St., live on Sputnik 105.5 FM” perfectly illuminated that station’s designed role as a state-sponsored purveyor of Russian disinformation. Sputnik’s D.C. bureau website blithely noted that the station points the way to “a multipolar world that respects every country’s national interests, culture, history and traditions.”

Not quite. Since the Yeltsin period, the Kremlin has advanced the notion of a multipolar world as a direct challenge to the international order led by the United States and Western Europe based on universal principles of democracy, the rule of law and human rights and backed up by our combined economic and military power.

The Kremlin views Western democratic values as a direct threat to President Vladimir Putin’s authoritarian regime, so these aspirations are countered by the innocuous-sounding concept of a multipolar world. Sputnik 105.5 FM forgets that the strategic essence of multipolarism is an international order based upon spheres of influence and military force. In this world, Russian hegemony over the former Soviet Union, central and southeastern Europe and other areas where Russian interests are in play is unchallengeable. Do not be fooled, Russian multipolarism has nothing in common with the benign internationalism enshrined in the charter of the United Nations.

The Russians have a term for the American staffers at Radio Sputnik: “useful fools.” Regardless of motivation, each of these folks is contributing in a very small way to Mr. Putin’s vision of tomorrow’s world order.

Russian Government’s Radio Sputnik Launches On 105.5 Washington DC

Radio Sputnik, the international broadcasting arm of the Russian Federation, is taking over the lease of Reston Translator LLC’s 105.5 W288BS Reston VA/Washington DC via an HD subchannel of Urban One’s 93.9 WKYS.

W288BS had carried the former “Bluegrass Country” format of 88.5 WAMU-HD2 Washington until earlier this month.

Radio Sputnik, formerly known as Voice of Russia, is the radio arm of the government owned Sputnik News Agency.

The 99 watt/189m translator broadcasts from Bethesda MD and covers Washington and its adjacent suburbs. The translator is owned by known communications attorney John Garziglia.

In a statement on the Sputnik website, Mindia Gavasheli the agency’s Washington editor-in-chief, stated:

We’re glad to finally be able to directly address our listeners in Washington. During the last few months Sputnik Radio has become the target of constant attacks in the US corporate media.

And often the people who wrote or spoke about us didn’t even bother to listen to our broadcasts first. Now however, Washington residents will get the opportunity to listen to us and not just to what is being said about us, and I believe that the difference will become apparent to them. We hope that our entrance onto the Washington market is just the first step, and will strive to ensure that more and more people are able to hear our broadcasts instead of rumors about them.

Among the programs that Radio Sputnik will carry are “Fault Lines” hosted by former Breitbart reporter Lee Stranahan and WPFW host/ACLU board member Garland Nixon and Brave New World and Level Talk both hosted by John Harrison.

INSTANT INSIGHT: Considering the current political climate, the fact that the Russian government has an FM voice heard in our capital is going to generate a lot of attention as our leadership can now just tune to 105.5 to hear what the Kremlin wants told. This is, however, not a first.

China Radio International, the broadcasting arm of the Chinese government, has brokered time on stations across the country for years.

While these have been leases, with the streamlining of foreign ownership interests in stations, this will likely become more common as international groups seek to make their side of a story heard.

Reminds me of how the Viet Cong used to use Hanoi Hannah to spew propaganda at the American troops during the Vietnam war. Hmm, maybe "Hanoe Jane" Fonda would be interested in interviewing for a guest host position.

Yes we do. I would rather be friends with the Russians than a bunch of muslim countries that hate us and terrorize us, but that we befriend anyway because we need their oil. Russia has oil too. Let's buy Russian oil and tell the Arabs to take a hike. At least the Russians don't come here launching terrorist attacks against us.

Right!! Or flooding us with illegal aliens and killer narcotics like Mexico or dumping lousy products into our market and putting our companies out of business like China. Russia has never done anything to hurt the US.

You're absolutely right. We need to start doing a better job of picking our friends. The Russians are really not much different in culture than Europeans, or than us. A U.S.-Europe-Russia alliance is all we need, not a bunch of cockroaches who are jealous of us and are secretly trying to harm us.

AND.....the Russians aren't a bunch of job steelers like Mexico and China.
