Recently several thousands children have arrived ILLEGALLY via Mexico from Honduras, Nicaragua, and other Central American countries .
In the early 1960's a similar migration of children under the age of 18 arrived in the U.S. escaping the brutal dictatorship of Fidel Castro in Cuba .
The program by which I came and another 14,000 unaccompanied children was named "PEDRO PAN FLIGHTS" (Peter Pan) An arrangement by Monseigneur Walsh and the Maia Catholic Diocese and the premise was very simple.
Any child arriving unescorted was taken care for by an organization ,individual,family member etc who was previously volunteered,checked and responsible for their transportation, documentation and well being once they arrived in America with no government interference, this was a totally private humanitarian project. Emphasize they were responsible for you and your actions until hopefully one day as in my case we were reunited with our parents, others never saw their parents again.
Out of this group most of us learned the language,assimilated, worked and paid for our own education and appliqued and obtained citizenship becoming AMERICANS OF CUBAN HERITAGE (please no hyphens in our nationality).
Several have distinguished themselves as Captains of industry, Politicians,Physicians, scientists, Actors and other professions always keeping the pride that they did it by hard work and ingenuity.
Then during the 1980's president Jimmie Carter worked out a diplomatic deal with the government of Cuba allowing thousands of undocumented people arrive in the U.S. under the Boat People . Castro emptied his prisons of common criminals,mental and correctional facilities.
The majority upon arrival ended up in Ft. Chafee Arkansas and other bases around the U.S. and eventually the majority ended up in prison or were returned to Cuba as persona non Grata.
Several religious organizations asked people to help in this humanitarian crisis and some of us fell for it sponsoring someone in our homes, finding out later these people were told by the government in Cuba that if the came to the U.S. the government will take care of them and house them, give them money etc. Several of us that helped found out that they stole from us, were lazy and still liked Castro eventually they left our sponsorship and many went back to Cuba.
Consequently tried to destroy the reputation that those of us that came in the 1960's have established as hard working people that wanted to live the AMERICAN DREAM and became PROUD AMERICAN CITIZENS.
Funny how history repeats itself, once again but this time we have a group of ILLEGALS arriving in our borders and the government and our taxes are suppose to take care of them and religious organizations are asking for sponsors.

I speak from experience these people we do not want in AMERICA.
