JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Illegal immigrants would be barred from attending Missouri public colleges under a bill that has cleared the state House.

Lawmakers have considered similar proposals for the past several years, but this year’s bill did not attract the same highly contentious debate that had marked previous discussions.

The House voted 125-30 on Thursday to approve the bill and send it to the Senate.
Supporters of the legislation argue that state resources shouldn’t be used to benefit illegal immigrants.

This year’s bill also clarifies some of the elements in a broader anti-illegal immigration bill approved last year. That legislation restricted the public benefits illegal immigrants can receive and required all public employers to use a federal database to determine if their workers are allowed to work in the U.S.
