Rep. Smith Sets the Record Straight on Amnesty

    U.S House of Representatives

    United States Judiciary Committee

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 5, 2010

Smith Sets the Record Straight on Amnesty

Washington, D.C. – House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Lamar Smith (R-Texas) today responded to claims by Democrats that a massive amnesty would bolster the economy and help reduce the deficit.

“Democrats claim that amnesty would be a good thing for the American economy. But amnesty for 12 million illegal immigrants would require American citizens and legal immigrant taxpayers to dole out billions of dollars in benefits, while allowing illegal immigrants to permanently keep the jobs they’ve stolen from citizen and legal immigrant workers.

    “Here are the facts:

The total cost of K-12 education for illegal immigrant minors and U.S. born children of illegal immigrants is $28.6 billion per year (Federation for American Immigration Reform).

The cost of healthcare for illegal immigrants under the new Obamacare could cost up to $30 billion.

According to numbers provided by the Social Security Administration, the legalization of five million illegal immigrant couples who work for very low wages would be a $500 billion blow to taxpayers. Amnesty for all 12 million illegal immigrants would increase this figure.

Low-skilled workers usually don’t earn enough money to pay taxes, but they still receive a check from the IRS in the form of the Earned Income Tax Credit. Putting illegal immigrants on the IRS pay roll will actually cost the federal government money.

“Amnesty would devastate the economy and further burden citizen and legal immigrant families. We should put the interests of Americans first.

Thank you, Lamar Smith! Thank you for exposing the lies the pro illegals are using to push this shamnesty down our throats. We will not take it. We are ALREADY BROKE! We can't sustain the cost of the illegals already, let alone the cost of them once they are full blown citizens, hence being eligible for even more tax payer funded welfare benefits.

The US has special visas for educated and highly skilled/trained workers. If people are educated/trained, can contribute to our society/economy, and actually pay taxes, they are more than welcome to home here. Until then, the doors should be closed.

    Set record straight on amnesty
By Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas) - 05/05/10 07:32 PM ET

According to recent news reports, some House Democrats are urging the White House to take up comprehensive immigration reform, claiming it will help reduce the deficit and boost economic productivity. But if the Obama administration gives amnesty to the 12 million illegal immigrants in the U.S., it would create a massive entitlement program and hinder our long-term economic stability.

Illegal immigrants already strain the economy with education and healthcare costs. Giving them amnesty would not fix these problems. Instead, it would require American taxpayers to dole out billions of dollars in benefits, while allowing illegal immigrants to permanently keep the jobs they’ve stolen from citizen and legal immigrant workers.

The Federation for American Immigration reform estimates the total cost of K-12 education for illegal immigrant minors and U.S. born children of illegal immigrants is $28.6 billion per year. And if illegal immigrants gain coverage under Obamacare, it could cost taxpayers up to $30 billion.
Claims that a massive amnesty would somehow “save social security
