Republicans are warning that they may pursue efforts to impeach US President Barack Obama if he goes forward with plans to use his executive authority to implement immigration reform.
On the heels of post-Election Day remarks made by President Obama last week, Republican Party representatives said the GOP should consider countering any attempt from the White House to unilaterally weigh in on immigration reform with an order of impeachment.
Last Wednesday, Obama warned that he will take whatever lawful actions he feels are necessary to “improve the function of our immigration system,” following years of unsuccessful efforts from Congress to accomplish as much on its own. The White House says that the Republican-controlled House of Representatives has previously pushed back on efforts from Democratic lawmakers to introduce immigration reform, and the results of last Tuesday’s mid-term elections will soon see to it that the GOP has a majority in the Senate as well next session.
“So if in fact there is a great eagerness on the part of Republicans to tackle a broken immigration system, then they have every opportunity to do it,” the president said. “My executive actions don’t prevent them…but should be a spur for them to try and get something done,” said Obama.
The GOP fired back immediately, with Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky), the soon-to-be Senate majority leader, saying the use of executive authority in this instance “would be like waving a red flag in front of a bull.” In the days since, other influential members from the Republican Party have weighed in with warnings to the White House.
In a video published to the web on Monday, Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas) said “impeachment would be a consideration,” even if it would need the support of two-thirds of the Senate, where the Republican Party will soon have control.
“There will be some reason found to introduce an impeachment resolution,” Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-South Carolina) predicted during a Tuesday interview on MSNBC. “These Republicans have decided that this president must have an asterisk by his name after he leaves office, irrespective of whether or not he gets convicted. It is their plan to introduce an impeachment resolution.”
Indeed, GOP lawmakers have since chimed in to further fuel those flames. “To me a constitutional question means that we have the option of impeachment,” Rep. Walter Jones (R-North Carolina) told Breitbart News on Wednesday, calling such action the best way to respond to any executive amnesty for illegal immigrants.
We have a constitution, and I am very disappointed from year to year that we do not follow the constitution. To me, if you think the president has violated his trust of office, meaning with the American people, then follow the constitution,” Jones added.
On Thursday, conservative commentator Charles Krauthammer told Fox News that he agrees that any executive action from the president on the issue of immigration would constitute “an impeachable offense.”
“If the circumstances were different, if we were at the beginning of a presidency, if we hadn’t had years when the Congress has been supine and unresponsive at other grabs of their authority by the executive–like Obama unilaterally changing Obamacare after it was passed about 30 times with no response from the Congress–the same as Obama essentially re-writing some of the drug laws,” he told Fox News host Megyn Kelly.
This idea of prosecutorial discretion is really a travesty. It is intended for extreme cases. For a case where you want to show mercy for an individual or two where it’s unusual incident, unusual circumstances and you say, okay, we’re going to give this person a pass. It was never intended to abolish a whole class of people subject to a law and to essentially abolish whole sections of a law. And that’s exactly what’s happening here,” Krauthammer said.
President Obama has previously drawn fire from Republican critics for similarly using his executive power to unilaterally act on issues, including in June, when House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) threatened to sue the president for allegedly abusing his constitutional authority.

Yikes. Passing short-term funding bill and enacting Universal E-Verify would accomplish a lot more.

Impeachment attempts may fool people into thinking that the Republican leadership is serious about protecting American interests, but that is complete nonsense. Impeachment would be just a smoke screen that the leadership knows will not work. And while it's not working, the Reubs big money donors will get the surplus labor that will keep wages depressed and make Americans nervous about losing their jobs.

I consider this idle chatter. I believe that republicans believe that Obama is their best political weapon to winning the WH in '16. I also believe that they believe that the precedent now set in this Administration will empower a republican president. This battle is not about or for Americans, it is for empowerment of parties!

Source: Obama to announce 10-point immigration plan via exec action as early as next week
    By Lucas Tomlinson

Draft of Obama's executive order on immigration revealed?

    video at link below

EXCLUSIVE: President Obama is planning to unveil a 10-part plan for overhauling U.S. immigration policy via executive action -- including suspending deportations for millions -- as early as next Friday, a source close to the White House told Fox News.

The president's plans were contained in a draft proposal from a U.S. government agency. The source said the plan could be announced as early as Nov. 21, though the date might slip a few days pending final White House approval.

Obama was briefed at the White House by Homeland Security officials before leaving on his Asia-Pacific trip last week, Fox News has learned.

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters traveling with Obama in Burma Thursday that the president had not made a final decision on any executive actions concerning immigration and would not announce any until he returned to Washington.

The draft plan, though, contains 10 initiatives that span everything from boosting border security to improving pay for immigration officers.
But the most controversial pertain to the millions who could get a deportation reprieve under what is known as "deferred action."

The plan calls for expanding deferred action for illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as children -- but also for the parents of U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents.

The latter could allow upwards of 4.5 million illegal immigrant adults with U.S.-born children to stay, according to estimates.

Critics in the Senate say those who receive deferred action, according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, receive work authorization in the United States, Social Security numbers and government-issued IDs.

Another portion that is sure to cause consternation among anti-"amnesty" lawmakers is a plan to expand deferred action for young people. In June 2012, Obama created such a program for illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as children, entered before June 2007 and were under 31 as of June 2012. The change would expand that to cover anyone who entered before they were 16, and change the cut-off from June 2007 to Jan. 1, 2010. This is estimated to make nearly 300,000 illegal immigrants eligible.

One of the architects for the president's planned executive actions at DHS is Esther Olavarria, the late Sen. Ted Kennedy's former top immigration lawyer.

Under the changes, Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers also would see a pay raise in order to "increase morale" within the ICE workforce.

DHS also is planning to "promote" the new naturalization process by giving a 50 percent discount on the first 10,000 applicants who come forward, with the exception of those who have income levels above 200 percent of the poverty level.

Tech jobs though a State Department immigrant visa program would offer another half-million immigrants a path to citizenship. This would include their spouses as well.

The other measures include calls to revise removal priorities to target serious criminals for deportation and end the program known as "Secure Communities" and start a new program.

The planning comes as immigrant advocates urge Obama to act. As lawmakers returned for a lame-duck session, Democrats in Congress on Wednesday implored Obama to take executive action.

"We're begging the president. Go big. These [illegal immigrants] are a plus to our nation. Mr. President, please. You said you were going to do something. Do it. Act now," said Rep. Juan Vargas, D-Calif.

House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer said: "I join with my colleagues in urging the president to take action. What he needs to do is give immediate relief to families who are being wrenched apart and living in fear."

Angela Maria Kelley, vice president for immigration policy at the Center for American Progress, touted executive action as a "tried and true component of immigration policy used by 11 presidents, 39 times in the last 60 years."

She said for many undocumented immigrants who have been here for years, "there is no line for people to get into."

Obama has vowed to act in the absence of congressional action and has claimed that congressional action could still supersede his executive steps. That claim was restated by Earnest, who said Thursday that if the House approved an immigration reform bill previously passed by the Senate, Obama would "retract" any executive order.

In a recent op-ed in Politico, Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., said Congress would stop Obama from taking executive action by adding language explicitly barring money from being used for that purpose. "Congress has the power of the purse. The president cannot spend a dime unless Congress appropriates it," Sessions wrote. He also pointed out that similar language in the past has prevented the president from closing the Guantanamo Bay prison camp.

November 17, 2014, 02:16 pm Poll: Plurality want Obama to delay immigration action

    By Justin Sink

A plurality of Americans say President Obama should wait for Republicans in the new Congress to act on immigration reform, rather than acting unilaterally before the end of the year, according to a new poll released Monday.

Forty-six percent surveyed by USA Today think Obama should hold off and allow the new Republican majorities in the House and Senate to act on immigration reform. By contrast, 42 percent of Americans say Obama should act now.

Obama has vowed to act before the end of the year, and administration officials have said he'll receive final recommendations on actions in the coming days.

“What I’m not going to do is just wait," Obama said earlier this month. "I think it’s fair to say that I have shown a lot of patience and have tried to work on a bipartisan basis as much as possible."

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), though, warned Obama against executive action during a meeting earlier this month at the White House, and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has likened the maneuver to waving a red flag at a bull.

Some congressional Republicans are examining ways they can use a coming budget bill to undercut the president's power to act on immigration.

The poll found voters may also be upset if the president vetoes legislation approving the Keystone XL oil pipeline. Six in 10 voters say Obama should sign a bill approving the controversial energy project, while just 25 percent disagree. The Senate is poised to vote on the issue on Tuesday, with supporters one vote short of the 60 needed.

Obama said last week lawmakers shouldn’t “short-circuit” the existing process for evaluating the Keystone XL pipeline, and aides have hinted he could veto the bill if it comes to his desk.

“I’ve been clear in the past … and my position hasn’t changed, that this is a process that is supposed to be followed,” President Obama said at a press conference.

The poll found voters do support a pair of presidential priorities Obama has rolled out since the midterm elections. More than two-thirds of those surveyed back the president's climate deal with China, which will decrease both countries' greenhouse emissions. And 63 percent of voters back the president's call for Congress to pass legislation explicitly authorizing military action against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

National Council of La Raza president and CEO Janet Murguía isn’t hiding her elation at the fact that President Obama is readying executive orders which would serve to legalize millions of immigrants who have skirted the nation’s immigration laws.

Appearing on MSNBC Monday, Murguía expressed that she felt “it is very important and urgent for the president to act as soon as possible” on immigration reform.

From today’s episode of MSNBC’s Rundown with Jose Diaz Balart:
Janet Murguía: The fact is that by delaying the executive action, the administrative action, I think it did harm some of the Senate Democrats who were in play for this last cycle. But frankly, we’ve moved on. We’re focusing on what the president will announce, and our hope is that he will be bold and that he will announce soon his intentions to allow those individuals who have been deeply rooted here in the United States for many years and are tied to citizen children. Hopefully advance opportunities for others and expand the category of “dreamers” as well. We see, unfortunately still, too many families being separated every day, and we believe it is very important and urgent for the president to act as soon as possible.

In the past, Murguía has also tried to shame the president into passing reform by labeling him the “Deporter-in-chief’” at the NCLR’s annual Capital Awards dinner.

The NCLR has also desperately attempted to shake ties to the radical organization La MECha, the Chicano Student Movement of Aztlán, which is largely regarded as the Mexican equivalent of the KKK, and “which firmly believes in exploiting illegal immigration to bring about ‘La Reconquista’, a violent overthrow of the southern U.S. states that would be absorbed into Greater Mexico,” writes Paul Joseph Watson.

Far from desiring unity and equality for all, MECha describes itself as “a nationalist movement of Indigenous Gente [people] that lay claim to the land that is ours by birthright,” a large swath of land that stretches from Central Mexico to Northern Texas and California. They are also rumored to have at one time espoused the motto: “Por La Raza todo, Fuera de La Raza nada,” which translates to “For the race everything, outside the race nothing.”

To be sure public interest is not at the forefront of La Raza’s agenda, the group’s corporate board of advisors lists “philanthropic” big banks such as Bank of America, Citibank and Wells Fargo, all of which played major roles in the 2008 mortgage crisis and all of which received significant financial compensation from taxpayers in the form of government bailouts.

Murguía’s declaration comes as quotes from Obama’s 2006 autobiography, entitled The Audacity of Hope, re-emerge in which he seemed to condemn an influx of illegal immigrants, stating it would further depress “the wages of blue-collar Americans and put strains on an already overburdened safety net.”

“The number of immigrants added to the labor force every year is of a magnitude not seen in this country for over a century,” Obama said in his book.

“If this huge influx of mostly low-skill workers provides some benefits to the economy as a whole—especially by keeping our workforce young, in contrast to an increasingly geriatric Europe and Japan—it also threatens to depress further the wages of blue-collar Americans and put strains on an already overburdened safety net.”

Executive amnesty, it is believed, would further accelerate America’s economic collapse, plunging it and its citizens further into insolvency.
“Already in this country, over the past five years, we’ve seen unprecedented increases in people/families on food stamps (SNAP program) now approaching 50 million; 10 million + now on disability and a stunning 92 million Americans are NOT working at all,” writes Mike Hendren. “Who in their right mind actually believes we can absorb tens of thousands of aliens without collapsing an already fragile economy?”

I believed that 'Bama had to know that another wave of illegals, which would be triggered by amnesty, would harm blue collar Americans. I did not know that he had already said that in print. Where is the fanboy/fangirl press? Do these people feel any pressure to tell the American people the truth about this narcissistic hustler? Or is it just to horrible to contemplate that the first black president is selling out the poorest Americans, to get the votes of his precious Undocumented Democarats?
