Long Beach police are bracing for a possible "bash mob" Friday and warning potential participants that they will be arrested if they contribute to mayhem and commit any crimes.

A Long Beach Police Department news release about the threatened event defined a bash mob as a "planned, sudden assembly of individuals who attack innocent people and businesses" and then quickly disperse after committing the crimes....

A dozen protesters ran through the streets of Westwood Thursday night, ending in at least one arrest.

The small group gathered at the Federal Building on Wilshire Boulevard for what was billed on social media as the Smash White Supremacy Fun Run, organized to protest the verdict in the Trayvon Martin case. They jogged en masse as they traveled east on their planned run through the neighborhood at about 7:45 p.m.

Just 15 minutes later, when they left the sidewalk and began to run in the street, the group was surrounded by more than a dozen LAPD officers. One protester, who had been cycling with the group of joggers, was arrested.

"I just feel like it's the LAPD, and they needed to make another arrest in order to show that these protests can't be peaceful," said Camille Miller, 26. "This was peaceful. I know they said to stay on the sidewalk, but he was on a bike."

None of the protesters seemed to know who officially planned the event, which had been promoted through Facebook.

The LAPD came to the location through information on the same network. "We heard about it through social media, and we decided to mobilize additional officers to the area," said LAPD spokeswoman Rosario Herrera. She was unable to confirm the number of arrests.
