Rubio drops immigration plan after Obama move
Monday, June 18, 2012 at 8:08 PM
Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., is dropping plans to introduce legislation that could grant work visas to some young people brought to the U.S. illegally after President Obama announced that the U.S. will stop deporting some illegal immigrants brought to the U.S. as children
Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., is dropping plans to introduce legislation that could grant work visas to some young people brought to the U.S. illegally, according to his spokesman.
Rubio, a potential running mate to Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, is suspending his plans after President Obama announced Friday that the U.S. will immediately stop deporting some illegal immigrants brought to the U.S. as children. Obama said they would be eligible for work permits, in an election-year action with appeal to Latino voters.
"The president's executive action takes a lot of momentum out of Sen. Rubio's push for a consensus, legislative solution," said Alex Conant, Rubio's spokesman, in an emailed statement Monday. "The president's action undermines the urgency to pass something before the election — a hard enough prospect even without the newly inflamed politics surrounding the issue."Rubio's proposal would grant work visas to some young people brought to the U.S. illegally as children, if they later served in the military or pursued an education."Rubio was working hard to find a permanent solution to this issue," Conant said. "We were not briefed, let alone consulted" before Obama made the announcement, he said.

Rubio Drops Immigration Plan After Some Deportations End
By Roxana Tiron and Derek Wallbank on June 18, 2012
Senator Marco Rubio, a Florida Republican, is dropping plans to introduce legislation that could grant work visas to some young people brought to the U.S. illegally, according to his spokesman.
Rubio, a potential running mate to Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, is suspending his plans after President Barack Obama announced June 15 that the U.S. will immediately stop deporting some illegal immigrants brought to the U.S. as children. Obama said they would be eligible for work permits, in an election-year action with appeal to Latino voters.
“The president’s executive action takes a lot of momentum out of Senator Rubio’s push for a consensus, legislative solution,” said Alex Conant, Rubio’s spokesman, in an e-mailed statement today. “The president’s action undermines the urgency to pass something before the election -- a hard enough prospect even without the newly inflamed politics surrounding the issue.”
Rubio’s proposal would grant work visas to some young people brought to the U.S. illegally as children, if they later served in the military or pursued an education.
“Rubio was working hard to find a permanent solution to this issue,” Conant said. “We were not briefed, let alone consulted” before Obama made the announcement, he said.
Policy Change
Obama said June 15 the change in policy provides a degree of relief and hope “to talented, driven, patriotic young people” and makes the nation’s immigration system “more fair, more efficient and more just.”
The new policy affects about 800,000 undocumented immigrants who were brought to the U.S. before age 16, have been in the U.S. for at least five years, have no criminal record and are in school or have a high school diploma or equivalent, according to the Homeland Security Department.
The administration’s action would bypass Congress, where legislation known as the Dream Act designed to provide a path to legal status for younger undocumented immigrants has been stalled.
It pushes the issue back into the spotlight in the election campaign between Obama and Romney, who has opposed the Dream Act. Romney said in April that he would review Rubio’s proposal.
Rubio said on June 15 that Obama’s new policy “imposed by executive order” is “a short-term answer to a long-term problem.” Rubio, 41, hadn’t introduced his proposal in the Senate.

Marco Rubio dropping election-year plan for GOP Dream ActPresident Obama
By Paul WestJune 18, 2012, 1:25 p.m.
In the latest aftershock from’s move to bar the deportation of some young illegal immigrants, Republican Sen.Marco Rubiohas apparently abandoned his plan to offer a conservative alternative to theDream Act.Mitt Romney
Rubio, a Cuban American often mentioned as a potential running mate for presidential candidate, said Obama’s announcement last Friday had probably killed his own legislative effort, at least until after the 2012 election.interview
Rubio said it would be hard to argue with fellow lawmakers when they say to him: “Why are we going to need to do anything on this now? It has been dealt with. We can wait until after the election.” The first-term senator made the comment in anwith theWall Street Journal’s Neil King.Democrats
Blaming Obama may be a convenient escape hatch for Rubio, who has struggled for months, without success, to develop an alternative that could gain broad support. Many in his own party remain deeply opposed to doing anything that would smack of amnesty for illegal immigrants, andare already on record in favor of a plan that would provide a clear path to U.S. citizenship.GOP
Romney is attempting to narrow Obama’s advantage among Latino voters, after spending the primary season running to the right of his mainrivals on the immigration issue. Polls have shown the president with a lead over Romney among Latinos even larger than Obama's lopsided advantage overJohn McCainin the 2008 election.a new poll
In an effort to reach out to Latinos, Romney has repeatedly sought cover from Rubio, a charismatic young conservative.
In recent months, Romney had hinted that he would back a Rubio proposal to help young, undocumented immigrants—assuming the senator could come up with one that gained wide Republican support—while declining to discuss the issue in detail. Last Friday, after Rubio responded coolly to Obama by warning that the president was making it harder, rather than easier, to resolve the problem, Romney echoed Rubio’s words in commenting publicly on the president’s move for the first time.
Republicans have pounded Obama for what they say was an election-year ploy designed to curry favor with an influential voter bloc that had been souring on the president.
At least initially, the decision has boosted Obama’s standing with Latino voters in key states, indicated. It also put Romney in the awkward position of refusing to outline an alternative, even ashe accused Obama of playing politicswith the issue.
The president’s administrative move was a short-term attempt to accomplish some of the objectives of the Dream Act—a proposal that would provide a path to citizenship for some young illegal immigrants—that has been blocked by congressional Republicans since 2010.
Rubio’s alternative would probably have stopped short of offering a clear path to citizenship—which opponents object to as a form of amnesty for lawbreakers—while allowing Republicans to go on record in favor of many of the Dream Act’s overall objectives.
On Friday, after Obama’s decision was announced, Rubio tried to walk a tightrope by reaffirming his support for “the idea that we should figure out a way to help kids who are undocumented through no fault of their own,” while at the same time criticizing the president for a move that, according to the senator, had made it harder to achieve that goal without encouraging illegal immigration in the future.
But his failure to put forward a Republican alternative is likely to underscore the wide gap between the party’s dominant conservative base and the need to improve the GOP’s standing with Latino voters. Romney has spoken with concern about his party’s future in a country that is becoming increasingly diverse, and in which Latinos are the fastest growing minority.
"We have to get Hispanic voters to vote for our party," Romney told supporters at a Florida fundraising event this spring, warning that the increasing Democratic trend among Latinos "spells doom for us.”
Rubio, whose autobiography, "An American Son," is being published Tuesday, has been making the rounds of media interviews to promote it.
He is scheduled to speak Friday to the annual convention of a major Latino organization, the National Assn. of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO), on the same day as Obama. Romney is to address the group the previous day.

Now that Obama has come out with his new policy, Rubio knows that his Dream Act idea is a non-starter. Actually it's a moot point because Obama's new policy will legalize the same folks that would have been legalized under the Rubio plan. It's possible the Obama administration came out with their plan to pre-empt the Rubio plan in order to keep the illegal alien supporters right where they want them (voting for Obama).

If the states are able to keep the illegal aliens from illegally voting, Obama's numbers of "Hispanic" approval don't matter.
I think they need to start prosecuting a few of the illegal aliens and green card holders that they have already caught for stealing the votes of legal citizens in previous elections, they might be able to make a point. They should prosecute them very publicly and with great fanfare since it is a felony for a non citizen to vote in a federal election and might send a message.
Obama had two years to take care of them and he didn't. Now he gives them a little reprieve until after the elections to buy some votes with favors and they fall for it hook line and sinker.
The DREAM Act introduced by the Democrats had everything but the kitchen sink in it and was not just for the kids it was for any illegal under the age of 35 and it was rejected for what it was.
If these "kids" are patriotic young Americans, as they are claiming, they should be appalled that they are just being used as tools for a socialist regime to stay in power and turn this country in exactly what their parents ran away from - poverty and socialism. Because eventually socialist run out of other people's money.Support our FIGHT AGAINST illegal immigration & Amnesty by joining our E-mail Alerts at https://eepurl.com/cktGTn
