Russia engaged in 'information warfare' in US, senator says

Russia engaged in 'information warfare' in US, senator says

    Published March 30, 2017 FoxNews.com

Russia is engaged in "information warfare" on American soil, and its interference in the 2016 presidential campaign is just one part of a strategy to undermine Western democracies that continues today, the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee said Thursday.

“Unfortunately, you will learn ... that these efforts by Russia to discredit the United States and weaken the West are not new. These efforts are, in fact, at the heart of Russian – and previously, the Soviet Union – intelligence efforts,” said Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C., at the start of a key hearing by his committee.

The focus of the hearing is on how the Kremlin allegedly used technology to spread disinformation in the U.S. and Europe.

Vladimir Putin himself on Thursday dismissed what he called "endless and groundless" accusations of Russian meddling.

"These efforts are, in fact, at the heart of Russian – and previously, the Soviet Union – intelligence efforts.”
    - Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C.

But ranking Democratic member Mark Warner said Putin ordered a "deliberate campaign" to undermine the U.S. election. The Virginia senator said Russian engaged in a disinformation campaign that “made effective use of its hacking skills to steal and weaponize information and engage in a coordinated effort to damage a particular candidate and to undermine public confidence in our democratic process.”

While intelligence committee hearings are rarely held in public, Burr said it was needed to ensure the American people know that “our community has been a target of Russian information warfare, propaganda, and cyber campaigns – and still is.”

Roy Godson, professor of Government at Georgetown University, told the panel the Russians have built up “skilled, experienced, and tenacious teams at home in their government and quasi-government agencies” and that they “maintain and develop both an overt and covert apparatus of well-trained personnel” to carry out their manipulation efforts.

Both senators agreed Russian interference in foreign elections continues unabated.

The hearing comes a day after Burr and Warner held a Capitol Hill press conference to outline their investigation into Russian involvement in the 2016 elections.

According to Burr, the Senate committee has asked for interviews with 20 individuals, and five have been scheduled to date.

Both pledged to avoid the partisan rancor that has defined the House probe.

House Intelligence Committee Democrats have called for committee Chairman Rep. Devin Nunes to recuse himself because of ties to the Trump administration.

Critics say the California Republican’s decision to meet with a secret source on the White House grounds last week to review classified material is evidence of his inability to carry out an unbiased investigation.

Nunes has declined to step down and House Speaker Paul Ryan has expressed support for him.

Many countries spy on the US - Israel being one of the most egregious.

May countries attempt to influence our elections - Israel being one of them.

This is done through lobbying - one of the most powerful in Washington, through the media, etc.

Saudi Arabia spends tons of money influencing our government.

Red China - don't know how much money they spend doing it - but it must be a lot - seeing as how they seem to get great trade deals. The really ironic part is - it's our money they are spending to buy our politicians and media.

    So why Russia?

Actually, if the American people really gave it some thought, they might ask why politicians - both sides and the media - all of it - are so after Russia. When they are others out there that are doing us more harm - Mexico/China, etc.

It could be smokescreen to keep the eyes off their own wrongdoing.

It could just be a dislike of President Trump.

It could be they are afraid of President Trump actually draining the swamp or upsetting the status quo.

    OR

Could it be they fear a relationship with Russia would actually be a good thing for this country?

Could it be that might actually bring any end to the Syria debacle - some sort of peace overall to the ME?

Is Russia talk of banking change a threat to the World Bank?

So far, they haven't shown how Russia meddling (if there was) caused any harm or what the intent was. The money deals seems to be pretty prolific with many other detractors (enemies) of this President.

    So what is the reason.

Maybe expose the warmongering weapons manufacturers and their shills in congress for what they are?

So what exactly are the threats or dangers to this country from Russia. So far, no one has pointed that out.

Not saying we don't spy, but Israel has been caught many times spying on the US.

As for lobbying, we know they have one of the most influential lobbies in Washington - and elsewhere.
