Kelly Responds to Gutiérrez Attack on His Service: ‘Irresponsible’ Members of Congress Did Nothing for Dreamers

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly responded to Democratc Rep. Luis Gutiérrez's (Ill.) remarks that he was a "disgrace to the uniform" over the Trump administration's cancellation of DACA, saying Congress had done "nothing" for the "Dreamers" when they had the chance.

"As far as the congressman and other irresponsible members of congress are concerned, they have the luxury of saying what they want as they do nothing and have almost no responsibility," Kelly said in an email to Fox News. "They can call people liars but it would be inappropriate for me to say the same thing back at them. As my blessed mother used to say ‘empty barrels make the most noise.’"

He added, "The congressman has a right to his opinion."

DACA, short for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, was the 2012 Obama administration executive order that shielded young immigrants brought to the country illegally from deportation.

After the Trump administration's announcement last week to wind down DACA and call for Congress to pass replacement legislation by March, Gutiérrez issued a withering statement about Kelly, a four-star retired Marine general and Gold Star father.

Gutiérrez, a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, claimed Kelly went back on his word to protect DACA while serving as Secretary of Homeland Security.

"General Kelly is a hypocrite who is a disgrace to the uniform he used to wear," Gutiérrez said. "He has no honor and should be drummed out of the White House along with the white supremacists and those enabling the President’s actions by ‘just following orders.’"

Gutiérrez, who has never served in the military, did not apologize for the remarks, saying Kelly "supports Donald Trump's xenophobic, racist policies."

Kelly, who replaced Reince Priebus as Chief of Staff in July, told Fox he did not have high hopes that Congress would get anything done on immigration:

"Every DOJ and DHS lawyer says DACA is unconstitutional. Every other legal scholar – right and left – says the same thing. Trump didn't end DACA, the law did. That said, I worked and succeeded to give the congress another six months to do something. I am not confident," he said.

Kelly previously served as secretary of Homeland Security, before taking the reins at the Trump White House. In his response to Gutierrez, he noted how he tried to get Congress to focus on DACA since the beginning of the Trump administration.

"During my time at DHS – from 20 Jan until this moment – I have met with hundreds of members on both sides of the hill … My [message] always was ‘I have bought you time to do something on DACA.’ I begged and pleaded with them. They did exactly nothing."

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) said last week that Trump would sign a bipartisan passage of the Dream Act, which would grant permanent legal status to eligible illegal immigrants.

Well, now there is no more question where the DACA 6 month extension plan came from. Furthermore, we already knew Kelly was one of the strong influencing factors that convinced Trump to sign a DACA (DREAMER) amnesty bill. I'd bet he is also the one that convinced Trump to work with Schumer and Pelosi on the DACA amnesty plan.

Kelly has too much power and influence in the White House!

Wow, when Trump said McCain wasn't a hero the liberal media absolutely thrashed him in the public square. However, we're not hearing much more than a peep from the media on this. Fair and equal media reporting ..... I don't think so.

I'd bet he is also the one that convinced Trump to work with Schumer and Pelosi on the DACA amnesty plan.

I read where it was actually Chuck and Nancy who requested the meeting. Trump and Schumer are old friends from New York, they worked together on a lot of deals. In fact, right after this meeting on the debt ceiling and Harvey Relief, Schumer had a team in to meet with Trump on an infrastructure program for a new tunnel between NY and NJ, where the states and the feds would split the cost.

Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) has responded to John Kelly after being called out for saying the Chief of Staff is a ‘disgrace to the uniform.’ According to Gutierrez, the retired four-star Marine general isn’t actually a general, rather he’s a politician.

Gutierrez said Kelly, a retired four-star Marine general, is “a politician, OK, not a general.”

“What could be more mean and more vicious than to say ‘you’ve got six months to pack up…and leave the United States’,” Gutierrez said.

“I don’t see [him wearing] a uniform,” Gutierrez told the Washington Post. “He’s a politician who works for Donald Trump.”

He said that the retired officer “did nothing” when Trump impugned Vietnam War veteran Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) last year, saying he preferred soldiers who “weren’t captured.”

In an exclusive email to Fox News, Kelly zinged Gutierrez after the amnesty-loving lawmaker called him a ‘disgrace to the uniform.’

In an email to Fox News late Sunday, Kelly responded by saying Congress did “nothing” to help so-called Dreamers when they had the chance.

Gutierrez was arrested last month, along with 30 other protesters, outside of the White House during a DACA rally.

Democratic Rep. Luis Gutierrez of Illinois was arrested along with roughly 30 fellow protesters outside the White House during a gathering commemorating the fifth anniversary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

The protesters were arrested for sitting on the sidewalk outside the White House after attending a rally in Lafayette Square across the street, according to The Hill. Gutierrez, a well-known immigration advocate, defended the protest shortly before his arrest.

“The same values that I inculcated in my daughters, that my wife and I raised them, [Dreamers] are an example and exemplify them. Their dreams are just like my kids’ dreams,” Gutiérrez told The Hill shortly before his arrest.

Hey, I was just trying to shift a little of the blame for Trump's amnesty push onto Kelly. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

So what? Human beings dream all over the world. So what if their dreams are just like your kids dreams or someone else's dreams? We've got prisons full of people with dreams. If you want my honest opinion, it's time for you wack-o-doodles to wake the hell up and stop blabbering about dreams of foreigners in our country in violation of US immigration law.

We have 75 million people on Medicaid, 44 million people on food stamps, people who can't pay for their medicine or afford their own food. And you want to whine about illegal aliens and their dreams. It's weird, cuckoo, bizarre, tainted, it ain't right. We've got 15 million Americans suffering incredible loss from these past two Hurricanes in 4 states, and 2 US territories, no one cares about these spoiled DACAs. We really don't. So why do you guys? Why do Guiterrez from Chicago and 4 Star Marine General Kelly want to give amnesty to DACAs??

Why? They don't even like each other, they have absolutely nothing in common, one is a DemoQuack Swamp Creature and the other one a Complete Anomaly ... why would John Kelly try to derail the Trump Agenda as Secretary of Homeland Security and now White House Chief of Staff to push an amnesty for illegal aliens??!!!

Makes absolutely no sense at all. And you know what it means when it makes absolutely no sense at all .... yep .... something in the wood pile of the cartels he chased when he was in charge of the Southern Command.

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy blasted Rep. Luis Gutierrez at a press conference Wednesday for attacking White House Chief of Staff Gen. John Kelly’s policies, and called on the Illinois Democrat to apologize for his remarks.

Gutierrez sharply criticized Kelly’s stance on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program — which provides a safeguard for more than 800,000 illegal immigrants brought over as children to live and work in the United States without the threat of deportation — calling the four-star general “a hypocrite who is a disgrace to the uniform he used to wear.”

McCarthy noted that Kelly is the highest-ranking general to have lost a child in battle, adding he believes that Gutierrez’s comments were uncalled for and inappropriate.

“We all know General Kelly is a retired general and the highest-ranking service member to ever to have lost a child in battle,” McCarthy said. “General Kelly has served his country in the Marines, he is serving his country again in this administration — he is truly an American patriot. Now what is disgraceful is to attack the character of an honorable man, who has dedicated his life to serving this country and whose family gave the ultimate sacrifice. I believe Representative Gutierrez owes General Kelly and his family an apology.”

Kelly has defended President Donald Trump’s decision to repeal DACA, arguing the executive order was unconstitutional and a matter that Congress should handle.

Trump gave lawmakers a six-month window to craft legislation to reform DACA, calling on them to construct a humane solution for those affected by the program.
