Michigan Democratic Sen. Carl Levin, the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, announced Thursday he will not seek re-election in 2014, setting the stage for what could be a lively Senate race in the state.
Levin, who was first elected to the Senate in 1979, said he plans to focus on veteran care, local issues in Michigan and eliminating influence of "secret" money in elections during his retirement.
"These issues will have an enormous impact on the people of Michigan and the nation for years to come, and we need to confront them," Levin said in a statement announcing his retirement. "I can think of no better way to spend the next two years than to devote all of my energy and attention to taking on these challenges."
