Sessions Emerges as Trump's Most Valuable Ally

President Donald Trump's firing of FBI Director James Comey shows how his attorney general, Jeff Sessions, has become indispensable to him.

Sessions, the first senator to endorse Trump and one of his most vocal proponents in Washington, sent a pair of memos to Trump the day after he and his deputy Rod Rosenstein implored Trump to fire Comey, which the president cited when criticized for the sudden and unexpected nature of his termination.

"The Director of the FBI must be someone who follows faithfully the rules and principles of the Department of Justice and who sets the right example for our law enforcement officials and others in the Department," Sessions wrote. "Therefore, I must recommend that you remove Director James B. Comey, Jr., and identify an experienced and qualified individual to lead the great men and women of the FBI."

"Jeff Sessions is truly the star of this show," Chuck Cooper, Supreme Court litigator and longtime friend, told Politico. "In all of the areas within the Justice Department's jurisdiction, Jeff is moving in precisely the way that Trump had essentially promised his supporters that his administration would move — whether you're talking about law and order, immigration, judicial selection, or any of the other big-ticket items that come under the attorney general's realm."

Sessions has reportedly enjoyed more freedom in hiring than other members of Trump's Cabinet, such as Secretary of Defense James Mattis and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who encountered resistance from White House aides and the Office of Presidential Personnel when attempting to hire staff.

"I didn't have to interview with anybody," a senior DOJ official told Politico, adding that White House aides "were all sort of on board with Sessions folks . . . From that perspective, I feel like he's first among equals."

No surprise here. AG Sessions is highly revered among Trump's base. Personally, I respect him more than any other person in Trump's cabinet (by far).
