Malware is kind of a generic all encompassing term. It includes viruses, spyware, etc. It is short for Malicious Software.

It is also a felony to hack into other systems. They can find who did this and I bet they already know, or are very close to finding out who.

Tuesday morning while I was here in the forum I clicked a link to constitution party....and I got up a blank page in the upper left hand corner was typed 'I see you'...I sorta blinked....and clicked off the page...clicked the link again and same thing happened...so I went to the address bar and typed in the name...bingo..the site came up just like always.

Then...the installer came and put in my new cable modem....he left the pc on...I had several things going so I didn't get back here to play with my new speedy pc for about an hour...and when I got back...my pc had been hijacked....I could do nothing with it...it was like an expensive paperweight...I had installed spysoft spyware and had run it often...always catching hundreds of malware folders and lots of files to quarantine...I ran it again as that and my email were the only programs that I could use...but I still couldn't do anything with the pc...

The pc had to go for repairs....the tech said it had dozens of viruses, trojans, data miners, spyware of every sort...etc. I've since put on a good firewall and virus checker which I run faithfully...

You all be sure you're protected...that little trip cost me $132.00...

But I'm back online...back in the forum...and my firewall tells me every little while that someone or something is trying to access....I feel so smug while I click 'deny'...

Ensure you have the patch for the Win2000 and XP exploit that allowed hostile code to enter your computer just by having an image appear on your browser. I believe only Internet Explorer was affected but not 100% sure.

And, when surfing the Web, I have ALWAYS had active (java) scripting turned off AND Active X turned off. Having those turned on exposes you to hostile coding.

Some sites require the above to function properly. HotMail requires active scripting so I turn it on for that site then turn it off again when I leave.

There are many sites with info to help you keep hostile coding away. It is worth the time to learn what you need to do.

Hopefully everyone has a firewall. ZoneAlarm is a good free on though there are others, also.

AdAware is handy but you can't rely upon it to catch/remove all hostile code.

Of the MANY offerings to help stop and/or remove spyware/malware/adware/etc. a highly rated one I decided upon after much research is WebRoot Spysweeper.

Pert' near everyone has anti-virus installed but you have to keep it updated. After 10 years of wandering the Web I settled on Nod32 but others have their favorites.

If you practice safe surfing and have the proper safeguards in place it is rather rare to become infected. In fact, I can't recall being infiltrated by any serious attacks.

E-mail has its own problems and precautions. Do a Web search to learn how to protect yourself.

Trojans are a separate breed and some of them require a separate trojan remover to swat them..... many trojans and worms can not be removed with an anti-virus engine. The main anti-virus sites typically have downloadable trojan removers designed for specific trojans. But, by taking precautions beforehand you ca almost always keep them from entering your computer from the get-go.

Here's some sites that can be helpful if you need to inform yourself about security:

    http://www.malwarehelp.org/

    http://isc.sans.org/

    http://www.viruslist.com/

    http://www.askwoody.com/viewpatch.php

Some of the above are geared towards average users while some are more technically-oriented

Here are some message boards. Of course, look for message board links at the above sites, also.

    http://forum.dshield.org/list.php?3

    http://forums.spywareinfo.com/

    http://www.wilderssecurity.com/index.php

There are many more sites out there. I bookmarked these in the past because they were useful.

    Good luck and.......

I have had several problems for over a week now. Already did all the win updates etc.

Click favorite link or type in a site and click go and it dont go, it takes me to other places.

Switching from one page to another on browser, it sticks and will not switch. Then all of a sudden the page I am trying to go to appears on the page it is stuck on, then visa versa.

    Still haven't resolved the probs.

Hope they catch the hacker/s and arrest them.

    Obbop,

    Thanks for the info.

I have MacAfee, which also seems, so far, to stop trojans. I also have Spybot Search and Destroy, which is free. Just checked it and it's stopped 1173 'processes'. It's 'blacklisted' them. I don't know how many are recent.

So sorry about your problems! And Great for you for taking care of it and having the courage to continue!

Sorry, I just don't get the hacker mentality that says that it's ok to hurt people. Guess you could say the same about illegals, huh? Seems to me, as if their moral code is...I WANT TO SO IT'S OK. In fact, my family and I, for a long time down here, when we see the unbelievable driving examples which we do, practically daily, we say "BUT THEY WANT TO!

Yes, they WANT to, therefore they have a RIGHT...I'm a little tired of 'rights' without responsibility.....

Hacking or hijacking my computer will not bother me all that much...surely not enough to cause me to disontinue being informed and joining with others to eliminate this problem.

    I'm not in the least timid...guess you'd noticed??? :P
