Thread: "Spanish Now the Second Language of the U.S" - ABC

An ABC promotion this morning for Diane Sawyer's Columbus Day broadcast from Mexico City tomorrow depicted her announcing, "Spanish is now the second language of the United States"!

I was so stunned that I am not sure whether she prefaced this remark with "the de facto" or "the official" "second language", or if she simply stated that "Spanish is now the second language...."! Perhaps others heard this, and could verify this statement was run this morning by ABC as part of their promotion piece on their Columbus Day broadcast?

Spanish is the national language of Spain and Spain only. I didn't realize there were so many Spaniards in the US.

Each "spanish"-speaking country has their own language and people from these countries may not understand each others "spanish".

Since she's broadcasting from Mexico Citty, she obviously meant to say "Mexican is the second language of the United States".

I was born in Latin America and I don't speak Mexican OR Spanish, I speak ENGLISH, my native latin tongue, plus another language.

Calling us all hispanic, latino or spanish is racist Diane, didn't you know?

I would boycott ABC but since I don't watch it anyway, it probably wouldn't be noticed. I am sending an email anyway.

Here is a great fax from PRO ENGLISH site. Urge Congress to promote English as the official language of USA.

we need to email abc and tell them Columbus was Italian... NOT mexican. if they don't even know this grade school fact how can we trust any 'news' info they spew?
