Students Charged With Hate Crime For Painting Swastika, 'Trump' On Chapel

Two Northwestern University students were charged with a hate crime after they allegedly spray-painted racist, homophobic messages and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's name inside a nondenominational chapel on campus, The Chicago Tribune reported Saturday.

Anthony Morales, 19, left, and Matthew Kafker, 18, were charged with institutional vandalism, hate crime to a place of worship, and criminal damage to property, according to the Tribune.

A Cook County judge ordered they be held in lieu of a $50,000 bail for allegedly painting the messages at the Alice Millar Chapel earlier in the week.

The pair allegedly painted over a photo of Muslim students in the chapel, in addition to painting a swastika, expletive and slur against African Americans, a derogatory word for homosexuals and Trump's name, according to the report.

SWAMPSCOTT, Mass. —The son of a Massachusetts Appeals Court justice has been arrested in connection to a vandalism spree at an Illinois chapel.

The graffiti was racial slurs, and swastikas and homophobic messages. The spray painted graffiti also included the name of presidential candidate Donald Trump.

Matthew Kafker was one of two men charged with institutional vandalism, hate crime in a church, and criminal damage to property.

Kafker, 18, is the son of Massachusetts Appeals Court chief justice Scott L. Kafker, who was appointed last year by Gov. Charlie Baker.

Kafker grew up in Swampscott and attended the Middlesex School in Concord before beginning at Northwestern University in Chicago this past fall.

"The Governor was shocked to hear of these reports and he believes there is absolutely no place in society for this type of despicable behavior," a spokesperson for Baker said.

Police say Kafker and 19-year-old Anthony Morales worked together to deface the Alice Millar Chapel on the Northwestern campus.

"Northwestern is committed to creating a safe, secure and welcoming environment for all of our students, faculty and staff. This disgusting act of hatred violates the deepest values and core commitments of our University and is an affront to us all,” Northwestern University president Morton Schapiro said.
